I wont say the parents are the cause but they are certainly responsible for this in some aspect. It's been well documented now. You put yourself out there like that and people will attack\threaten you this isn't new. If my daughter started doing something like this I would immediately make it stop not just for her own well being but for the rest of my family as well. It would put as all in unnecessary danger.

I agree that they bear some responsibility but the people making the threats and attacks should also be held fully accountable.

"Retarded" has not been a medical or technical term for a long time. It is purely derogatory and people calling her "retarded" are not doing so in a misguided attempt at technical language.

Also, even if "retarded" were still a part of medical lexicon, it never was used as a term for mental illness. "Retarded" refers to intelligence level. You can be mentally ill and have a high level of intelligence. Someone who is "retarded" is someone with a severe inability to retain, process, and utilize information. That obviously does not apply to Greta.

China, USA, and India are the biggest polluters. China's economy is fueled on manufacturing shit for America. You cant separate that out and just say that's it's China's fault.
America has the political and economic power to literally change the world. We can force people to go green via political and economic pressure. We can supply and invest in green technology in developing countries.

What do you mean why would China listen to us? Who buys the shit that the Chinese make? Americans are blaming the Chinese for doing shit we are paying them to do. Guess how we get all of these luxury items like big screen Lcds for cheap? By exporting the labor to developing countries with cheap labor and zero regulations. If we raise our standards, the world has no choice but to do the same. All of the other countries with money are already on board--most of Europe, Canada, and I'd bet Australia and New Zealand would be on board. China and India cant ignore these markets.
But as long as profits are the first and only priority, nothing will change. And profits is the only thing that drives America.

There are solutions, there isn't the will to actually enact them from politicians or governments.

Green tech is a pretty broad ass category to say it's all crap. There are a ton of things that we could be doing that we're not.

To be honest, I thought she said that for all of about an hour (heck, I've only know she existed at all for about a week), and I didn't take her any less seriously when I believed it than I did before or do now.
This isn't even an issue of 'teams'. Climate change is a serious issue and deserves serious discussion. But she's a kid. She was fifteen when she began this crusade, and here we are, a year later and, almost overnight it seems, she's a global phenomenon - and some of the language used to speak about her is damned near messianic. Heidi-of-Arc's come down from the mountains to set us right with her melodramatic, yet straight-talking, ways.
The whole thing comes across as a marketing gimmick; "how to Make A Social Media Influencer for Idiots".

I'm likely to be duped by all sorts of absurdities claimed about her, because I'm only paying surface-deep attention, and the whole scenario comes across as pretty absurd to me.

I'm not sure she's been "brainwashed". That's a pretty strong word to use. She is being used by them, but shes no more "brainwashed" than kids raised with religious believing in god are "brainwashed". She undoubtedly got her strong positions on climate change from her parents. And her parents are scumbags for parading her around on the grand stage. But brainwashed? Too strong

I agree with you about the parents, and yes I've dealt with people on the spectrum. I used to date a girl who's little brother was severely autistic. Not functional, with the mind of a 5 year old. He was a sweet kid and I spent a lot of time with him.

Only from a cold logical standpoint can we say the parents are the cause of the attacks against Greta. That's just logical cause and effect.
