NFL Green Bay Packers 2023

Anyone else super irritated that we don't have an answer on what's going on with Rodgers yet?

He said he wouldn't drag this out. It feels like it's being dragged out. I thought for sure we'd have an answer by now.

Seems likely he's going to the Jets, lets rip that band-aid off and move on already...

Well, I guess it is pretty clear at this point. Probably just ironing out the final aspects of the contract.

Hoping the Packers can bank in on the trade. Will be an interesting season next year to say the least.

Butte College had a pretty ridiculous JC team.

I lived with a bunch of their players in an off campus dorm when Rajas was playing there. Holy shit I feel old.

Good luck GB. Some of the craziest fans in sports, but I doubt you get 3 HOF guys in a row. But who knows?! Maybe? Time to find out.

Well, he is gone. Frustrating end to the Rodgers era. I was really hoping he would just retire a Packer, but I respect his drive to still want to play. Just gonna post some of my favorite throws from the bad man:

Listening to Aaron today, I got the impression that he decided to retire then he heard from people that the Packers had been talking to other teams about trading him. That seemed to change his mind. We don't know if the Packers initiated trade talks or responded to other teams who contacted them. Spotrac shows Aaron's dead cap number as just under $100 million and his cap number as just under $32 million. They might be able to spread the dead cap over the next two seasons. I'm not clear on how a trade would work but I suspect the Packers would still be on the hook for some of the signing bonus unless the Jets take it on but I don't even know if that can be done. If trading Rodgers to the Jets leaves the Packers on the hook for $68 million against this years cap, it would be stupid to trade him.

I don't see how the Jets are going to take on his salary with only $13 million in cap space.

I think he definitely wanted to retire as a Packer.

He did. Rodgers was asked at his locker, early last season, about if he thinks he will retire a Packer. Rodgers answered with a resounding "Yes. Definitely". With the way his contract was set, I figured he probably would. But the minute he had a down year, Gute went back to the original plan of moving on from Rodgers. Which is fine, but it should have been done after the 2021 season.

All signs point to Gute and Murphy not being entirely sold on Love being the guy, but he was drafted to be and has a lot of upside. The biggest question we should all be asking is:

Can Jordan Love overcome Joe Barry's defense?

Packers need a quarterback, wide receivers, tight ends and a defense. Jets are on the cusp (of greatness/contention).

I said all last season that if the Jets had a competent qb they'd be super bowl contenders. If Rodgers can be top 10, which is very doable, i think they're at least battling the Chiefs/Bengals/Bills. The team is absolutely stacked with talent.

Why not give it one last shot and play for them? It makes all the sense in the world.

I don't think it's so much Rodgers down year last year but more of seeing if Jordan Love is going to be a great quarterback. Do they pick up his 5th year option or let him go? They had a similar choice with Rodgers when Favre provided the drama. What if the Packers had cut Rodgers loose? Would someone have picked him up and would he have had a great career somewhere else? Would he have been picked up as a backup for a few years and been out of the league? Would he have been just another player who never made it in the NFL?

What if Jordan Love could be another great quarterback and never got to play?

Meanwhile, I just saw this on Spotrac Twitter concerning Rodgers cap numbers in Green Bay

Aaron Rodgers' current 2023 cap hit: $31,623,568

Aaron Rodgers' current traded 2023 dead cap hit: $40,313,568

Aaron Rodgers' June 2nd traded 2023 dead cap hit: $15,833,568

If it costs the Packers more against the cap to make the trade, why make it?

The Jets are on the cusp of losing in the wildcard. Be serious.

With Rodgers, the Jets have one of the best offenses in the league (as long as their running back stays healthy). And just today they upgraded their defensive secondary.

The Jets won't be contending for anything with or without Rodgers. The AFC is too deep and they are overhyped.

The Jets have just over $17 million in cap space so I don't understand how they can take on Rodgers over $31 million contract for 2023. They could turn it into a signing bonus to spread out over a multi year deal but how long will Rodgers play?

Big Bob just signed a one year deal with the Bears.

Maybe we get a TE kinda early in this years draft? I fucking hope so.

That sucks. I loved Tonyan pre-injury. He was Kittle-lite which was dope as hell to have.

I guess we can thank Rodgers that Lazard didn't sign with the Bears as well. <45>

Sucks that it seems like Gute/Murphy and Rodgers couldn't handle this like grown ups and just talk honestly about their intentions, I won't blame either side too much, though. Rodgers seems to be an absolute pain in the ass to deal with, who knows what would have happened if they straight up told him that they want to move on. He's also the last person on earth to have the right to complain about passive-aggressive actions. On the other hand, everything since the Love pick was a mess and their chance to get a great compensation was gone the minute they signed that retarded deal with Rodgers. More than enough people wanted to move on after yet another failure as big favorite, at home against Jimmy G. The team was DONE.

As for journalists vs. Rodgers...it certainly seems like he found a great tool to spew his propaganda with the McAfee show. There is no way in hell he didn't realise that the Packers wanted to move on, I also don't believe for a second that he really wanted to retire. Schefter might be a douchebag, but his reporting on Rodgers was somehow spot on the past few years. Rodgers goes to his buddies and cries that it's not a money issue, that he doesn't want to be the highest paid player bla bla bla, then everyone hated on Schefter... guys wake me up when someone else signs for 50 fucking million per year.

Personally, as stated in the NFL thread, I would like to know what the compensation will be already. Every party thinks that the other one has no leverage lol. Both have their arguments. I'd love to have #13 this year at the very least, but no one has any idea where the talks actually are. If the Jets really just want to give up thirds and conditional seconds or whatever, the Packers have every right to wait it out, let him come back or retire. I get the feeling that it won't be done anytime soon. Jets have also every right to claim that the Packers want to get rid and they are the only bidders (so were the Raiders with Adams, tho...both teams still found a nice solution), they can move to the other great options on the market or let Zachary Wilson decide their job future.

2-4 years
