Grasso Noncommittal Regarding Shevchenko Trilogy: ‘I Don’t Like to Stop the Division’

They should not do an immediate rematch. It kills the division. Valentina already received her immediate rematch and didn’t win. It holds up the division.

Also, if they give it to her and she wins, they’ll be 1-1-1. How is it fair to not then give Grasso one (who already gave Shevchenko 2 of them). Then you’re looking at four consecutive fights between two fighters. Just terrible for the division.

Immediate rematches are out of control and need to be stopped.
Extremely easy to explain.

Immediate rematches shouldn't happen because of what just happened, because now they SHOULD run it back. Valentina drew the champ, so they should settle it.

If they become 1-1-1, they need to do a fourth? No. The draw wasn't necessary for this to be a question. People argue for, and the UFC runs, instant rematches for dominant champs all the time now, so isn't that just the same question as "what if the champ regains and they're 1-1, so do they do the trilogy?" to which the answer is almost always No. No difference now.

They ran a rematch for a bad reason. That doesn't negate the fact that now they have a good (if not the best) reason to rematch. You can't now NOT do a rematch because you shouldn't have in the first place

You mean like Shevchenko when she ducked not only the rematch of a fight she KNOWS she lost to Taila.

But also the trilogy both Dana, and Amanda said they wanted in a post presser in July 2022.

Instead that clown waited 8 months or something to call out r6 Alexa.

One of the sweetest cases of cosmic justice delivered in all of sports history.

you know....when you put it that that, I'm on board on the poetic justice train.

I'd be okay with a rematch but I'd also be ok with giving the shot to blanchfield. I think she would run through Grasso. Grasso has some pretty terrible TDD.

it was a good fight, but i agree, time to move on. I also think there were some hijinks there - leaving some potential for a trilogy down the road. albeit, i suspect neither will be champion a year form now and it won't matter.

Thread title's a little misleading. She did make a good point about holding up the division, but she also said that if it's what the UFC wants then let's do it again. So she was completely committed to fightingVal again, even if she correctly felt it wasn't the right thing to do

I wanna see a trilogy, but I respect what Grasso is saying, if anything give Val Santos or Erin then if she wins have her back in the title shot mix

I don't think so. Bullet has already shown she's far too small for bantamweight. I'd rather she takes the Rich Franklin approach and wins a fight or two before getting the rematch. Hell, let her fight Fiorot and then a Santos rematch (if she can pick up a win). After that, let her fight for the belt. It'll help build anticipation and let the division evolve some.
How is she far too small for bantamweight, when her only losses are to the former champ?

What a champion. Since there are so many WMMA challengers she hasn't faced yet this makes sense.

Val will remain a contender and there's always a trilogy down to the road. I didn't realize they put Fiorot above Blanchfield in the rankings so I guess she should be next.

Considering how effective Shev was with the striking, Fiorot might be able to outpoint Grasso but I don't know much about her ground game.

The draw actually negates the need for a trilogy. Grasso won the first, Shevchenko failed to win the rematch. It’s over.

I wouldn’t call her defense terrible, and it’s not like Blanchfield’s takedowns are great.

Truth and logic get in the way of a thread’s narrative. Can’t have that

Wrong, the LOSS negated the need for a rematch, but they did it anyway. A draw basically obligates one.

It's not over now, but it should never have started.

The draw likely necessitates another rematch which is unfortunate as Blanchfield and Fiorot are going to suffer as a result.

Makes sense to me. They had a draw, but Grasso also submitted her the fight prior. I think you can close the book on this for now considering you got Blanchfield and Fiorot on 6 fight winning streaks and undefeated in the UFC.
