This. Your GP's advice on rest and recovery is about as useful as the medical advice you're likely to get on an internet forum. See a sports specialist; if possible, get referred to a physical therapist. Constructing a false binary between either deadlifting as normal or resting completely for six weeks is about as good as most non-specialists can do for you.
