GOMORRA (Italian TV series)

That last season and ending was hot garbage and ruined the legacy of the show.

100%. There were so many directions they could have gone in but ended with some of the dumbest decision making from what otherwise was a brilliant show. The whole love-hate Genny Ciro relationship just got too much and Genny's actions towards Ciro were nonsensical. Seasons 1-4 was some of the best TV I've ever seen. I know some don't like S4 but I liked it as we saw Genny trying to make a change. It was a change that made sense.

One of the major praises this show should receive should be the lack of police interaction. When police get involved in mafia / gangster shows it seems to really drag down and slow the pace. Gomorrah was really good on not involving too many of these interactions.

Watched it multiple times. It's very good but it's not really comparable to the Sopranos. Sopranos balances actual family life and day to day mob activities including the mundane. Gomorrah is just chaotic action and drama 24/7. Sopranos is better by a significant margin

Wouldn't even compare it to the wire or breaking bad. It's more Shield without the episodic side elements each episode but with the over exaggeration of the genre.

Loved Gommora and The Immortal. I was ready for Ciro an SC Genny to rule the world together but they went in a different direction. Still good though but I agree the first few seasons were the best.

That shoot out in the tunnel was a masterpiece.

Killing off most of gennaros crew was a dumb move by the show runner they were much better than the sangue blu guys lead by enzo or the blue bloods crew.

Can't actually remember the shootout now lol.

Agreed that Genny's crew was cooler than the blue bloods. Those guys felt like they were kids playing at being gangsters.

They also were dipshits playing gangsters, just punched above their weight and intelligence due to being behind Genny.

Overall their bitch ness has a legit realism to it, most are dumbass young kids doing the street work.

That's also for world building, as set up a context where law is so stuck by law limitations that criminals most imminent threat is other criminals, while law is perceived as something distant

It also sell the idea of areas where the state to some extent gave up full control and just tolerate the existence of shit (at least till slow ass law machine can get enough elements to arrest this or that guy), wich further justify wild shit happening

Last but not least director played smart dodging it as a whole because compared to USA, Italy is waaay less lose on portrayal of police, so unlike american series you will rarely see corrupted cops, cops breaking procedures and even use of deadly force is showed waaay less, usually in desperate -basically self defense- situations to justify it to the maximum and don't glorify it... essentially italian portrait of police is realistic-boring and is'nt much action entertainment friendly (while Tarantino loved violent 70s one, but that's many decades ago)

First 3 seasons are goat level then quality drops like hell
Yeah I'd change that to only include the 1st episode of Season 3 (Malamore one I think).

Season 2 was the best and episode of s3 kind of finishes that arc.

End was disappointing given the overall quality of the show but still ok. I was just glad they didn't 'Game of Thrones' it. .. so more forgiving than I might otherwise have been.

How is the dubbing on this ? Is it good like Dark or shitty like most?

Seasons 1 and 2 were a masterpiece. And I actually liked the beginning of season 5. I liked that they brought Ciro back since it's consistent with his Immortal nickname (and even seems like it could've been planned whether it was or wasn't), but yeah they didn't do a good job with the ending at all. It didn't make any sense that Ciro went through all that and sacrificed so many of his guys just to hurt Gennaro's feelings and eventually make up with him (before they both died). Dumb ending. And yeah the bromance between them was way overdone.

You're supposed to watch the movie in between the seasons (2 and 3 if I'm not mistaken). It's all connected.

Is that movie part of the same universe? I never watched it.

Season 5 actually had a lot of time to be written with all the covid stuff they had no excuse for they crappy episodes they wrote.

Yes but season 5 had 10 episodes instead of the usual 12, in that sense it was rushed. But yeah they have no excuse for the garbage writing - seems like Marco D'Amore fell in love with his character and then pushed the show to direct around him unfortunately.
Could have had a much better storyline if they kept the Levantes around and had some type of Genny vs. Levantes vs. Sangre Blue w/ Ciro or something along those lines.

I just finished reading Roberto Saviano's book which the series is based on - great read for anyone who enjoyed Gomorrah.

Really good write up and analysis, thanks. Kind of reminds me of those lawless areas in Mexico.

Hopefully Saviano can pump out something great to make up for S5. I loved ZeroZeroZero and hoped for a second season but I’m ok that it was a standalone. Might rewatch that one.
