This goes down in quality quite a bit in later seasons, but man, the first 3 seasons or are the best TV I've seen. Just so incredibly good.

Yeah, understand that from american perspective is easy use the "mafia" word to cover all them, but in reality they're so different that the dynamic changes completely

Camorra worked well for that type of tv show because while still big money crime, is more about many indipendent rival clans controlling different areas rather than one single big organization, so you have lot of action because clashes and struggle for power

The paradox is that when a single giant crime org in full control you have some sort of "peace" (not good for a tv show) because nobody else in the area challenge them, so you have no clashes

If i think the most powerful org in Italy today, they do very small number of murders (at least ones we are aware of) each year

Also the book is based on Camorra and the author infiltrated them in Naples and after the book was published he received several death threats.
He still lives under heavy protection IIRC

Favourite series hands down. Just a bit disappointing with Season 5 since it was rushed and the finale was probably the lowest point of the whole series.

He did'nt infiltrated, he's just a journalist/writer that made research and denounced openly what lot of people knew already

Is also pretty politicized guy and get ever publicized as living under protection over years and years ago threats made by bunch people as result of the book (surprise, make a career on exposing criminals can result in threats)
Of course would not suggest him to go around Naples alone as if nothing happened, and yes him having home anywhere in Italy would be problematic (dude live in New York), but i doubt his life is at real risk tbh specially now that he's in the US

Reality is we have far more humble people that do more damage to org crime, and truly needs to live protected 24/7
Don't know how easy is find info in english on a man called Gratteri, but dude daily work against Ndrangheta and almost made it to become minister of justice (only to be turned down at very last moment, when only the president of the republic or somebody very close to him could have put the "not him"), him getting stopped tell a lot state-crime relationship

Berlusconi likely have connections to buy some votes in the whole south, so his party make deals with different people based on in wich region he needs the votes

But tbh he's quickly becoming ever more irrelevant, the 3 parties alliance ruling Italy at the moment have one party far more powerful:

Berlusconi is the 6,4

At this point his utility is indeed that he can still buy some votes in the south, but not much else

The last season wasnt that great but overall was a 9/10 show

The last season did so much damage that it dropped the entire show to a 7 maybe it is a similar situation to game of thrones.

iirc the changed writers and the actor playing ciro started directing more if you seen the spin off "immortal" he directed it was obvious he wasnt a good director.

That shoot out in the tunnel was a masterpiece.

Killing off most of gennaros crew was a dumb move by the show runner they were much better than the sangue blu guys lead by enzo or the blue bloods crew.

Tbh don't find Sopranos and Gomorra to be that similar

To find an american counterpart would say Gomorra and The Wire are more similar, even if there are still lot of differences

Also it's not about the mafia, but about camorra

Gomorra is closer to the movie sicario the wire and sopranos seems tame compared to gomorra.

You're supposed to watch the movie in between the seasons (2 and 3 if I'm not mistaken). It's all connected.
