Just finished the 5th & final season. Great ending to a phenomenal series. If you haven't seen it, it's a crime show, basically THE SOPRANOS -- same film-quality production, in hour-long episodes -- except it's the actual mafia, takes place in modern-day Italy.

Amazing cast & performances, lots of twists & turns in the story, & it ended on a high note. Gonna miss this series

Used to be hard to find, following season to season overseas, tracking down subtitles files etc, but now the entire series is on HBO if anyone's interested

Nice. I’ve heard it’s great but never had a chance to watch it.

I thought this was gonna be some Guardians of the Galaxy spin off on Disney+ .

I'm so relieved!

Shit, wish Netflix added the other 3 seasons. May have to subscribe.

@Loiosh did you ever circle around & finish this series? I didn't even know there was a season 5 until like a month or two ago, & it ended up being an unexpected treat. Finished great

I dropped it after
They killed off the ponytail guy
but right until then it was really good.

I liked the series but it just fizzled out for me. I think maybe I got to S2. Not sure.

This is a good reminder for me to revisit it.

it is not Italian Sopranos
Sopranos is a family drama with mafia elements

Gomorrah is a hard as af crime show with almost no other elements

the first 3 seasons are probably the greatest crime/mob fiction ever made.

Tbh don't find Sopranos and Gomorra to be that similar

To find an american counterpart would say Gomorra and The Wire are more similar, even if there are still lot of differences

Also it's not about the mafia, but about camorra

yes it's about organized crime groups

in that way the wire is superior to the Sopranos

as it is more about the rise and fall of an organization

although in the USA I think all Italian organized crime groups are categorized as mafia whether it is Sicilian, calabrian or napolese. even groups like stida might be mafia like because of their structure and hierarchy

Yeah, understand that from american perspective is easy use the "mafia" word to cover all them, but in reality they're so different that the dynamic changes completely

Camorra worked well for that type of tv show because while still big money crime, is more about many indipendent rival clans controlling different areas rather than one single big organization, so you have lot of action because clashes and struggle for power

The paradox is that when a single giant crime org in full control you have some sort of "peace" (not good for a tv show) because nobody else in the area challenge them, so you have no clashes

If i think the most powerful org in Italy today, they do very small number of murders (at least ones we are aware of) each year

but that is a subset of mafia media in the US.
it is the loss of prime position
so mismanagement and informants and cops and how they disassemble a large organization like the wire

sorry just out of curiosity what is the most powerful group in italy now?
