I always figured you could neutralise a lot of GNP if you were to break their posture, is that true ?

If you are out of posture, you are out of balance....and throwing down shots when you are off balance = easy sweep for the bottom guy.

Breaking posture is the #1 objective of a bottom guard player and sets up all your sweeps and submissions.
