I go kayaking in rivers with gators all the time. Never had one come at me in all that time. They dont give two shits about you. It's fun to steer your kayak towards them if you have someone who isn't used to it. Freaking them out is priceless.
 
Here in redneck land of SW Florida, the locals swim in alligator infested rivers and lakes for generations all the time. Every once in awhile there is an alligator attack, but the rednecks are unfazed and change nothing and just say like "oh well, it doesn't happen that often"
 
Must've played too much donkey kong country 2 and did the bayou stages where you hop in the gator's mouth and it springboards you over a cliff

I was hoping there was some big stick lying around, but no. There were trees, and I had knife ( I could chop off a thick branch), but all were very close to the water. None of the other plants had what I needed to protect myself.

Also makes me wonder what type of wild animals do you guys see around your area? I get wide eyed when I see a wild raccoon, rat, or even a cow. The most dangerous thing I'll see sometimes are coyotes. I have no idea if they're aggressive towards humans, but i'm never really scared of them. I'll still look over my shoulder though

Meh, it's a small gator. Probably a regular too, so sort of tame.

Fun fact. Run in zig zags if you’re getting chased by a gator or croc. They will probably catch you if you run straight and don’t have much of a head start.
