I will admit I only started watching the fight in the 2nd round but am I missing something here in the 1st round?.... did he really "dominate" with 8 strikes landed?

No, you got it right. Giga literally spent 3.5 minutes on his back or getting outwrestled. And more importantly.. The last 3.5 minutes. That’s what we all saw, and how the round ended. If it had been the other way around and it had been with the last 1.5 minutes on the feet, the judges may well have judged the round the other way. At least then there would be an argument for giving Giga the round. As that would have been the last thing the judges saw in the round.

It’s really quite simple, and obvious.

Round 1 had Giga impose his will for about 45 seconds and the rest was Calvin.

Pretty simple way to score it.

How does landing 9 total strikes and 0 knockdowns in a 5 minute round constitute dominating it?

Kattar landed twice as many total strikes, took Chikadze down, controlled him for 3 minutes 19 seconds, and had him in a submission attempt in Round 1.

Round 2 could have been Giga's

Kattar's effective grappling was much more dominant than Giga's striking in the first round. Kattar won round 1, easily.

He didn't dominate the striking in round one...half the round was stand up and he was favored slightly, not dominate. Kattar wasn't in any trouble and was holding his own...the 2nd half of 1st round, Kattar was in control and had him in an arm triangle and took his back...Kattar won that round easy.
