Tuesday’s raids on almost 200 mosques, offices homes and warehouses across Germany came after Angela Merkel’s government announced a ban on one of the country’s best known Islamic organisations, True Religion.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a ban on full-face veils in the country, during a speech at her party's conference on Tuesday.

"The full veil is not appropriate here, it should be forbidden wherever that is legally possible. It does not belong to us," she said at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) gathering.

Her comments were met with sustained applause by the audience.

It's not the first time party leaders have proposed banning the Islamic dress, with Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere also calling for the veil to barred from public places in August.

"It does not fit into our society for us, for our communication, for our cohesion in the society.... This is why we demand you show your face," he said at the time.

Can we really call this integrating? It seems people are segregating themselves rather than mixing with others. This is terrible and there are many places in Britain the same, and all over Europe.

This is a massive issue, and yet we still turn a blind eye.

German chancellor Angela Merkel’s call for a burka ban in the country has come too late, according to right-wing voices on Twitter.

Nigel Farage, a UKIP member of European Parliament and a hard-line Brexit proponent, didn’t take long to respond to Merkel’s u-turn on the burka ban on his Twitter account.



Merkel, who admitted 890,000 asylum seekers into Germany in 2015, made the surprising announcement during her party convention Tuesday in Berlin. She was re-elected leader of the Christian Democratic Union after running unopposed, opening the door for her to seek a fourth term as Germany’s leader.

“Full veiling is not appropriate here — it should be banned wherever that is legally possible,” Merkel said to party faithful, explaining her hardened stance on Muslim face coverings. “Our law takes precedence before tribal rules, codes of honour and Sharia.”

British television personality and controversial Mail Online columnist Katie Hopkins agreed with Farage, adding that Merkel calling for full face veils to be outlawed in Germany doesn’t go far enough.



Australian conservative politician Cory Bernardi, a senator for South Australia, suggested on Twitter that his country should follow Merkel’s lead.

BERLIN – Members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party voted Wednesday in favor of scrapping rules that allow the children of immigrants to be dual citizens, a call that was opposed by party leaders and met with a swift rebuke from its partners in government.

Until two years ago, German-born children of immigrants from outside the European Union or Switzerland had to pick one nationality between ages 18 to 23 — a rule largely affecting Germany's Turkish community. Merkel's current center-left coalition partners, the Social Democrats, insisted on dropping the requirement as part of their price for entering the government after Germany's 2013 election.

That was never popular with Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union. Delegates at a convention in Essen narrowly backed a motion from the party's youth wing that advocated returning to the old system.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere had argued against the motion, noting that no potential coalition partner after next year's election would agree to it.

Wednesday's decision appears to reflect a desire among some CDU members for a sharper conservative profile. Merkel has sought to cater to that by promising that last year's huge migrant influx won't be repeated, backing a partial ban on face-covering veils and calls for tougher rules on deportation.

Merkel's party leads in polls, but would likely have to turn to one of two left-leaning rivals or a socially liberal pro-business party to form a government. It says it won't ally with the upstart nationalist Alternative for Germany, which has thrived in polls by attacking Merkel's policies in the migrant crisis and has backed conservative positions dumped by the CDU.

Justice Minister Heiko Maas, a Social Democrat, said that toughening the dual citizenship rules would be "a gigantic setback for integration." He said his party wouldn't agree to such a move.
