Just googled her to see what the news was saying about her. I figured they must be tearing her apart. But Germany seems relatively happy. lol.

So far, instead of turning away from their leader, as one might expect, Germans have been flocking to her like moths to a flame. A string of recent polls (taken before the weekend attacks) showed that Merkel had largely recovered from the hit she took during the refugee crisis. The chancellor’s approval rating reached 59 percent in July, the highest since September 2015, in this month’s benchmark Deutschlandtrend poll, conducted by Infratest dimap for German public television.

With little more than a year to go until the next general election, Merkel, the leader Germans only half-mockingly like to refer to as Mutti (Mommy), is once again ascendant.

To add to your point: It could simply be a case of the average person just not being into current news, politics and being concerned about future societal problems because like most Americans they are concerned about the here-and-now, about their jobs, personal lives, family, enjoyment etc...

IMO what people fail to understand here is that the majority of German people were in favor of letting in all those refugees, thats why Merkel did it in the first place.
Greece bailout was unpopular but really the only reasonable option at the time.
Currently Germany is the strongest it has been since reunification and you have to say Merkel did a good job until this refugee disaster.

But the main reason why she is so popular is that there is no alternative. There is no vote-able conservative option besides her, and the SPD (sort of center left Party) is in shambles these days they barley get 20%

Because that would 100% do it for Germans. They wouldn't disobey the sign. They would burp at you and act unattractive if you did disobey the sign, however. How do I have this knowledge? I frequent the local German American Cultural Center lol.

German culture is organized, and they are a people and culture needed in this world, but they are not perfect.
