So I finally had a chance to check out Beyond Good And Evil. I think it holds the title of "most under-appreciated game ever" in a lot of circles. So, given all I've heard, and read over the years, I gave it a shot thanks to it being on PS+ this month, annnnnd......it's okay.
It's a good game, but I don't see the hype. Especially considering the pedigree of games it was buried under, like "Jak & Daxter", "Sly Cooper", and "Ratchet & Clank". It has some cool ideas, and the world is well realized, but it's just another platforming action game. All of the "innovations" I heard about aren't nearly as groundbreaking as I've been lead to believe. The combat is smooth, but I don't see how being able to fight multiple enemies fluidly all that impressive. The "taking photos" element is fine, but games like Dark Cloud, and Pokemon were doing it too. Other than that, it's fairly typical of the genre at the time, and does nothing all that different to separate itself.
It is a good game, no doubt, but it's not this unforgotten masterpiece I've been hearing about for years. It's main flaw, and what I assume helped it under-perform are the characters. The main character is bland as fuck, and her side-kick ain't much better. The Adventures of Plain Jade, And A Pig-Man. No wonder it didn't draw much attention.
