Gane vs Volkov is closer than you think - Round 2 in particular was a toss up

me too, and said this in the PBP thread

Last round was dramatic, but with the current scoring system was not enough for a 10-8, thus not enough to even be a draw. Last rounds don't win fights.

Rogain whipping up fervour about a robbery was BS, he should know better, the muppet. I was disgusted

Word
i wouldn't mind this fight sanctioned as a draw. Or a split decision for one or the other. But you can't just give an unanimous decision to Volkov. Can't believe he couldn't dominate a guy on one foot

The proper impression is that Gane should have lost and Volkov was there when it happened. Volkov did nothing to win and had a terrible performance. The decision was bad but hardly a robbery, and even if it were a robbery it still wouldn't be a particular injustice. If Byrd weren't one of the judges giving the fight to Gane the result would already be mostly forgotten.
This is completely correct. I believe it could be fairly scored for either one but the fact that Gane was immobilized with a broken foot and Volkov couldn't clearly put it in the bag doesn't say much for Volkov at all. If that's the best he could do against 50% Gane, he should stop complaining and get back to the gym right away.

Rounds with no clear winner should be scored 10-10, because the fact is some rounds are too damn even or uneventful to truly give it to one fighter or the other. As it is, judges are basically implored to do a coin flip on 50/50 rounds and who knows if they're basing it on one random punch, an interpretation of control or some other insignificant thing.

If that means more draws, so be it, at least the scoring will be more accurate. And I'd rather see that than a result that a majority of people don't accept as legitimate.
100% agree here.

Drop aggression and octagon control as criteria, and allow more 10-10s. Could it lead to some more less conclusive outcomes? Yeah probably, but rather that than poor outcomes that as you say, might be the result of coin flipping rounds too close to call.

The Woodley vs Thompson fights, both 1 and 2, are perfect examples of how 10-10s would lead to more accurate scoring outcomes.

Gane beat Volkov 50-45 in their first fight.
Gane was definitely the better fighter back then. But Volkov has really improved since, and I say it as someone who was not a big fan.

But that last fight told us something regardless of scoring: neither guy seems ready to face Aspinall, or even Jones. The grappling and TDD were just not good enough
I give Gane benefit of the doubt because of the injury, but he should prove himself against Blaydes or Almeida.

I missed the fight. Was it entertaining atleast?
It's worth a watch just so you can join the debate. I thought the fight was a very clear Volkov 29-28 at the worst, possibly 30-27 Volkov depending on the judge. It wasn't the most eventful of fights, especially the third round, but it wasn't the worst.

If you watch the fight knowing the outcome and knowing that Gane destroyed his left foot on his first front kick I'd imagine that it comes much closer to being the worst.
