Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

AMD just copy Nvidia in the GPU market. Even trying to make enterprise purchasers their primary client. Intel are a non-factor in the foreseeable future. They are restructuring, selling off assets and recently delayed self production till 2030(?).
Yeah, because enterprise and especially datacenter pay much more.

And Intel is doing ok with GPUs all things considered. They just don't have the money to push hard anytime soon.

Like I said, is what it is

Picked up a 5080 card today. Was planning on upgrading this gen since I was using a 3080ti, but wasn't in a big hurry. Been monitoring stock in a few places with pretty low urgency since they're a good chunk of change. Started getting kind of anxious with all the tariffs and was worried there would be a spike in prices, so jumped on one from Best Buy. Should be able to pick it up by next weekend.

Do you guys still want a DVD ROM drive or Blueray drive in your desktop pc ?

Or is it a thing of the past ?

When was the last time you used one?

I might put that in an office build because you never know when someone will pull out something from like 20 years ago with data on it they need accessed. But a gaming PC in 2025? Nah. Not cost effective. Thumb drives are so cheap, so much faster to write/read data, so much faster to transfer data, physically smaller, less fragile, more conveniently attached to a keychain, and you never have to worry about rewriteable modes or any of that crap.

Hell, I hadn't even thought about this in years, but a single-layer DVD holds 4GB of data, right? I could just upload that to the cloud and have a friend across town download it in less time than it would take me to burn the disc, drive it over, and import the data into their PC.

Still nice to play a DVD, but you have a point.

That's why I asked when the last you used one was. If you're one of those guys that had an epic DVD or Blu-Ray collection, from decades ago, like one of my friends, then it's probably worth it to you.

Otherwise, it's like all other old media out there. Maybe one day your wife goes digging into boxes in the attic, and finds some old family movie you'd put on a disc way back then (or maybe it's not family friendly at all *wink* *wink*). At least for now, it's still easy enough to buy one of these ODD drives to put into your computer, or even an external one to run via USB, so that you can access that content. In the future you might be in that predicament where this has happened, and suddenly you're off to the flea market to try to find a VHS player that doesn't exist at the stores so that you can play it.

Amazon says I bought a usb dvd drive 9 years ago, and I can only recall using it once in the past 9 years to rip a DVD. I don't know where it's at, or if I even still have it.

I have one with windows OS on it. I think that might be all I’ve used them for in years

Well this out of the blue literally Microsoft just signed a deal with Intel for their 18A node turns out a direct shot at TSMC 2nm chips. Intel already has had talks with Nvidia. Real benefit here is no tariffs on US made chips

"Team Blue did set the stage for the 18A node when it showcased it at the recent Direct Connect 2025, saying it is the "most advanced process manufactured in the US". Earlier claims have shown that 18A is said to be a direct rival to TSMC's N2 process, coming in with similar SRAM density and performance/efficiency figures. Generationally, 18A is said to show much more superiority than the Intel 3 node, so it is safe to say that Team Blue has managed to create a "wonder" here, and this is reflected in the clientele's sentiment towards the process."

Wont they still be prone to tariffs since the materials sourced are provided from out of country?
They posted they avoid tariffs or made a deal on them it seems like the administration gave China access to some technology that was blocked under Biden.

Microsoft has been in the interested phase for months, same as the others. I'd wait until the ink dries and deals are confirmed, especially given that Tan hasn't had time to make many changes of substance.

Thinking about biting the bullet and getting this. My gf wants my old one.

This is about $1,000.00 cheaper than the Corsair I was looking at. It's all Gigabyte stuff, including the Aorus Master and their X870E.

Looking at the components, it is not much more expensive than getting all the parts for my own build. Smash or pass?

If you're set on a 5090, then yeah you won't find many lower priced prebuilds and prices aren't dropping anytime soon.

Possibly under a 1,000 dollars with 48 gigs of ram on two GPU's could be impressive for running LLM's add two more run larger then 128 billion parameter models could all the way up to 400 billion parameter models under 3 grand the price of one 5090.
