That's their entire test suite, not just gaming. For gaming only, they only test 5 games, and the 5800X3D beat the 12700K in those tests by a lesser 11% average using the same speed DDR4 to maintain consistency.

Techspot ran a 12-game value crunch comparison, and the 12600K on DDR5 RAM against the 5800X3D on DDR4 RAM with CL16 (the common timing in the stronger value RAM similar to in the bundles from Microcenter) stacked up at a 165 to 173. That's a mere 4.8% advantage for the 5800X3D against the 12600K.

Alternatively, look at the 12700KF vs. the 5800X3D.

Not for gaming (which even he already admitted).

Not every game and game engine utilizes the additional L3 cache.

Plus we're dealing with a dead AM4 socket line with no upgrade path. With a bundled CPU that are limited supply refurbished 5800X3D's.

Thoughts on the Asus G14 2021 at $799? On paper, you can count on one hand how many times an RTX 3060 laptop has been cheaper in the US, so was thinking of picking it up for light gaming while traveling/work.

Its a nice looking machine. Prepare to become your own geek squad though. Lots of issues. It will run quite hot so you will have to tweak a few things. You can disable turbo boost on the ryzen chip via the registry to get a start on getting the temps under control. The 2021 comes with a 16:9 screen while the 2022 has 16:10. Makes a difference on a 14" screen. If you use external monitor, who cares though. Its a great price at $799. I would suggest getting a legion 5 2022 model, great build quality, excellent cooling and its low pro. 15 inches though.

Edit: i dont think that g14 model comes with the matrix display just an FYI

Most reviewers running dated test setups was the main reason why 5800x3d/Zen 4 Vs Alderlake had a lot of discrepancy.

The head guy at techpowerup explained it. He was only one of 3 websites I know of that actually did a full re-do of his entire test setup. This was the main reasoning why Alderlake saw a dramatic increase towards the 2nd half of 2022

1. Windows had 2 different updates that saw dramatic increase in e-core utilization. Slightly increased gaming performance because now those main cores could fully focus on the games itself
2. Windows had a temporary security fix that slowed performance on Intel chips. Once that issue was resolved performance in everything (applications and games) increased.
3. Most review sites weren't testing Ram on equal footing. For example if the original 12600 review was DDR5 4800 they would reuse those results on the Zen 4 review instead of re-testing all of the alderlake on equal footing. The 3 review sites that tested Zen 4 and Alderlake on the exact same ram configuration all had Zen 4 as at best equal or slower.

Re-doing the entire test setup with updated everything is a pain in the ass which is why so few do it but that's how you actually get viable results. Techpowerup for example had to re-do 27 different CPUs along with every single game patch, every single windows patch, and every single bios update.

The guy who did it said it took him 5 days a week for 4 months. It took so long to do that they almost didn't release the Zen 4 reviews on time. Historically this usually isn't an issue but the security patches, DDR5 being brand new, and E-core being new caused testing to be a gigantic question mark

Acer has a 2 for 1 deal on a 24" 1080p 100hz Freesync VA panel for $110 (shipping was an additional $20 for me). And they're VESA compatible.

Gotcha thanks. I'm favoring the 14 inch since I have a desktop, so the little bit of portability seems nice. At either rate I bought it, I figure I can return it if there are better deals on prime day.

It's a stunning piece of hardware there's no question. Armoury crate will be able to tell you your temps but you can download HWinfo to monitor your cpu temps. It might look a bit complicated at first but don't worry you will figure it out in a few minutes. Another thing you can do to keep temps down is limit your fps. go here https://www.reddit.com/r/ZephyrusG14/ for good info on stuff and if you have any questions just type it in the search box in that reddit. One thing to keep an eye out for is the wifi card. Ryzen chips ship with a meh wifi card. you can get an intelax210 one which is good for about $20. I dont like opening my laptops up if i dont have to so i would suggest keeping an eye on wifi speeds and if it's all good then don't worry about it :) there is no ethernet port but you can buy a usb adapter if you like to be hardwired. im assuming not. honestly that is such a great looking machine! did u get it already or waiting for it to arrive? if you need help with other laptops lemme know :)

edit: for the record i prefer ryzen chips for the way better battery life

edit 2: since ur on a 5800h ryzen chip you will be on ddr4 ram, something to consider if you're feeling iffy about it, a newer model will have ddr5, not the end of the world, just food for thought

Thanks for the info. I'm not really worried about ddr4 and pushing the laptop too much, it would just be for gaming for a week or two each month and writing and basic work stuff mostly. I have a RTX 2060 desktop atm and would just upgrade that if i needed better performance.

I'd probably upgrade the storage eventually but that's a bit annoying since it only has one slot. Good to hear on the AMD processor, I've only had intel systems before. I'm supposed to get it in about a week, so right before Prime day.

I recall you mentioning that because I initially reacted to the deviation in their results with an alarmed skepticism drawn from a cynicism fostered through the downfall of UserBenchmark.

It's strange that most seem oblivious to how strong even Intel's 12th gen remains compared to the latest Zen 4 chips. But that's familiar, too. We saw that entrenched fanboyism for years on behalf of Intel. Now we see it on places like Reddit for AMD. Intel prebuilds and Intel bundles are almost always undervalued, or at least, there is an underwhelmed reaction to a phenomenal Intel value on sale when a far less impressive AMD value generates twice the virtual foot traffic in excitement. It's irrational.

I need to buy a 10,000 dollar fan lol.

Looking like EVGA could be out of the Motherboard game too

In what could be the beginning of the end for EVGA after its spectacular withdrawal from the graphics card market that it held leadership position in; the company is reportedly winding down its desktop motherboard business, too. Korean overclocker Safedisc, writing on Coolenjoy tech forums, stated that the company's entire 170-strong workforce in its Taiwan office involved in the motherboard business, have resigned, including KINGPIN. EVGA could withdraw from the motherboard business just like it did with graphics cards—by halting sales and recalling products from the channel, and retaining them to serve as warranty stock in case existing customers claim RMA or warranty service. We have reached out to EVGA for comments.

Update 07:45 UTC: We've heard from workers at EVGA Spain "it's just another day at the office". So maybe it was only Kingpin/the OC team in TW that has resigned, or the whole story is completely untrue.

I wonder who is going to buy them out. My guess would be Corsair, or whatever that big holding company is that owns Corsair.
I always wondered why they didn't switch to making AMD graphics cards. I know the margins aren't that high on cards, I don't remember what the exact number is, but it was shockingly low.

Wish they approached this more seriously. Wouldve been interesting to see the temperature numbers of the CPU and GPU if their heatsinks were positioned in a optimized way.

It was something along the lines of Evgas GPU division made 80% of their revenue but only like 32% of their actual profit. That's insulting low and I'm sure the next year numbers where going to look worst (all of their old 3000 series stock was going to need to be sold at a loss and i'm sure the planned 4000 series generation they saw zero confidence/margins in when you factor in how expensive the MSRP was )

I always forget about EVGA being in the mobo game. They only sell expensive ones, too.
It wouldn't surprise me in the future if Nvidia pulls a 3dfx and cuts out all of their partners.

Pretty big discount on the G402 from Best Buy if you're on the hunt for a gaming mouse on the cheap:
($14.99) Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury Optical Gaming Mouse

This same mouse is $49 on Amazon which has been the typical price for the past six months where it's clearing out from third party retailers. It has tended to vacillate between $30-$50 over the past few years.

I saw an NZXT case at Microcenter that has a fan on the bottom front at a 45 degree angle that blows cool air on the GPU.
