Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

MSI is bringing back the Cyclone cooler on a 4060.

Is that shit any good, or is it just for the guys who like to play Barbie with their computer?

It's definitely leaning on nostalgia.
How it performs? We don't know yet, it hasn't been released, from what I can find.

Took my PC into work today to have the professionals take a crack at why I have been having graphics issues. After a full wipe and windows reinstall, updating everything, and a full run at it with an air hose... still doesn't run right. Run some hard core diagnostics on it (hooray working for a tech company), turns out my GPU is running at a whopping 35% efficiency. Power isn't an issue AT ALL, so the only answer is that it's dying. And with how old this build is, upgrading isn't worth it. So guess who is getting a new PC this year, whether I like it or not! So now I am off to price out a new rig, and decide if I want to build it myself (I can easily take it to work and have them help) or just be lazy and buy pre-built.

Edit: And my positively ancient Saitek Eclipse keyboard is finally on its last legs, so that will have to be replaced soon also. At this rate, may as well say fuck it and replace everything. Except my Nostromo, I will my never give up my precious.

With AMD's AM5 cpu's just coming out, you're in a pretty good spot to build a new system.

Yah, to be honest this damn thing at least chose a nice time to start croaking. However, with me just having caught up on bills and saving to buy rather than rent, the budget is pretty thin. But upgrading/replacing isn't really an option due to age. So I am kinda in a weird spot where I need to do something, but budgetary constraints are gonna be rough.

@Madmick Which one of these bundles would you get?

7700X + MSI B650-P Pro Wifi + 32gb 6000 = $370
7800X3D + Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX + 32gb 6000 = $470

I know the 7800X3D is the best gaming chip right now but the 7700X is no slouch.
None of the Intel bundles are really worth it in comparison.

If one's budget isn't so tight he's making sacrifices elsewhere I always think $100 is justified to take the better CPU because given the perspective of years I think most gamers play on a CPU before they upgrade/replace it, I think most would realize the $100 was a drop in the bucket of their lives over that period of time whereas how their games ran was something they noticed persistently.

But, if one is being a surgeon about cost:performance, I'd consider the games being played. Not all games benefit much from 3D cache, and so don't benefit equally. Also, some games are far more CPU intensive.

The Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO is on sale for $40. It's only $3 off, but fits into the discussion category as well.

Tomshardware recently said that if this cooler fits your case, this is the cooler you should probably buy, and it's hard to recommend any other air cooler when this is available.
For the price, it's hard to go wrong. The fans may not last since they're cheap, but when compared to the NHD15 at $110, it's worth the gamble imo.

Between those choices 7800X3D bundle is best, for gaming. Few days ago that bundle was down to $435 at Microcenter.

I went with their 14900K bundle when it was available.

How much was the 14900K bundle?

If it matters, the Gigabyte motherboard has more M.2 solutions onboard (3 vs 2), but it only has 4 Sata ports vs 6 on the MSI.

r/PCMasterRace still recommends a Ryzen 5000 CPU for 3/5 builds even though it's a dead platform now.

Yeah it's still a great chip for $130. Same with the 12400F for $150.

Problem is the top end AM4 gaming CPU is priced near the 7800X3D. Anyone who lives near a Microcenter looking to upgrade their AM4 CPU. Theyre better off getting the 7800X3D bundle for $150 more.

Daily on the CS2 subreddit someone always posts if they should upgrade to the 5800X3D from a 2000, 3000 or 5600X CPU.

Yeah they still have a 5800X3D bundle for $320 but the 7700X bundle is only $50 more.

Schiit Magni+ headphone amp for $69 from Schiit.

i wouldve got the magni a few years ago but i went with the newly released JDS Labs atom instead. both of those amps are really good value, and are super affordable. the newer atom amp just barely pulls ahead of the magni in power delivery by the ever-so-slightest margin. both are rock solid headphones amps that can provide a whole lot of clean power. they can probably run anything.

i've been driving a 600 ohm set of beyerdynamic DT 990 premiums with it. these cans have been going steady for 3 or 4 years. and besides the magni or the atom, i really dont know if theres any other headphone amps on the market that can drive these cans properly and wouldn't set me back over a grand. i would recommend either of these amps if you have some heavy duty headphones that require a fair bit of power to drive.

I have a Magni, and the biggest benefit to me was that they're made in America.

At $70, you're usually looking at SMSL and FX audio level stuff for dedicated headphone amps. You can get the FiiO E10k or iFi Uno, but they're more dac/amps.
Some of that Chinese stuff isn't too bad. I have an SMSL SAP50 that's lasted longer than the Sony receiver it replaced.

I've been tempted to pick up the Fosi Audio K5 Pro when it goes on sale. It's USB powered, but having that mic input would be nice.
