I mean that is what's rumoured.......but HBO would of happily had 10 x 90 minute episodes, I'm sure.
The producers obviously just want to end it as quicly as possible. No one can say season 7 wasn't both rushed and a bit of a clusterfuck, even if it was still enjoyable. Seems they're happy to serve up Big Macs now as opposed to put a bit more effort in and give us filet mignon.
I mean I’m sure it’s an absolutely grueling process and they’ve done it for years, but they are showrunners- they don’t have to be as intricately involved in every aspect of the production as they are (like the writing of so many episodes). It’s their choice- maybe it would have served them to have less of a tight hold over the show and bring some other key figures in to help develop the later stretch.
Season 7 wasn’t bad at all in my opinion- it just wasn’t on the level of what came before. It definitely felt rushed as you said. And while episode 7 was quite good and ended strong, episode 6 fully encapsulated the idea of sprinting to the finish line and sacrificing logical storytelling in order to get to a certain point (Frost Maul gets an ice dragon so the wall can come down).
