Game of Thrones fans will have to wait until 2019 for the planned final season of the award-winning series, a gap of more than a year since the end of season seven.

Cable channel HBO said on Thursday that the program would return in 2019 for a six-episode final season. It did not specify the month.

The series is HBO’s biggest hit ever with some 30 million viewers in the United States alone and an army of devoted fans worldwide.

The final season is expected to reveal which of the warring families in the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros will win the multigenerational struggle for control of the Iron Throne.

Production on the final season started in October, and filming is expected to last until mid-2018. HBO’s head of programming, Casey Bloys, has said multiple endings will be filmed to avoid leaks or hacks of how the saga ends.

Show creators, David Benioff and D B Weiss, told Entertainment Weekly in 2016 that they wanted to make the series finale as spectacular as possible. HBO said on Thursday that Benioff and Weiss will also direct the final season.

The long gap between seasons seven and eight will give author George RR Martin the chance to finish one or two new Game of Thrones books that he said in July he was working on. The television series has already advanced beyond the events of Martin’s five published A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels.

Not particularly happy about this but maybe the longer wait will make for better written episodes than last season.

It is known.

Wasn't gonna come back this year, so had to be 2019. I'm fine with it if it means they're taking their time to make it perfect

With a budget of 15 million an episode they’ve definitely got the funds to get it done right.

Meanwhile Fatty will not release Winds of Winter by the time it airs.
TBH, it's kind of like pulling teeth trying to finish a book. There's some sort of resistance that happens after like the first 25% is done, so I'm not surprised especially with Martin reaping the benefits of now being a world-famous, wealthy author for him to sit down and get back to the grindstone (even more so considering ASOIAF is a massive world with hundreds of characters, which is probably a huge mental toll on its creator).

But if my whole legacy was going to be defined by this one series, and the most popular television series in the world is based off of the same work, I think I'd find the motivation to have chipped away at it by now until it was done.

I got burnt out on it during the last season and didn't bother to finish it, just doesn't have the same epic feel it used to have in my opinion. Characters got boring and the writing got super stale.

Good, if the ending they give us sucks, then we can just go with one of the other endings.

This is stupid, the seasons were already far enough apart. No one is gonna give a shit by 2019.

Talk about shooting a series in the foot

Best case, it starts in January next year...that’s still an entire year away’! Fuck that.

I think you're vastly underestimating the GOT fandom. I would agree with any other show though.

Maybe , but I was a pretty big fan. The short seasons and long times between has turned me off. I can’t even remeber who all the characters Alive still anymore are and wtf they were currently doing

Nonsense.

The longer wait will make it even better.

Waiting longer for old Star Wars movies increased interest. Look at how long people had to wait for Pacquiao v Mayweather, it became the highest grossing PPV ever.

I don’t think it being pushed back is gonna make the writing any better. This last season was pushed back a bit too and only had 7 episodes and the writing sucked. Luckily they brought back sapochgoat to direct a few episodes.

The good part of the show has run its course anyway.
