FX's FARGO Discussion Thread

I thought Sy would be looking for revenge against Creepy Guy, but he seems to have fallen in line. I'm surprised they killed off Ray so soon. Emmit, Sy and Nikki need to team up and get revenge on Creepy Guy and his 2 stooges. Though, I'm kind of hoping Varga makes it through alive. He's very effective in his role.

My only issues with this season so far are the pacing -long stretches without seeing certain characters- and the fact that only some of the main characters are interesting to me. Varga, his two Hitmen, Ray and Nikki are by far and away the most interesting. Sy is entertaining and is well acted, but his character is kind of meh. Same goes for Emmit and the female cop (can't even commit her name to memory yet lol).

The cops aren't really meant to be the most interesting characters. They're basically nice, small town people who end up getting caught up in something much more chaotic than what they're used to.

The point of Fargo in general is people getting caught up in things far bigger than what they're used to -only for it to snowball.

That doesn't excuse them from writing the characters better tho. I think most people would agree that Hank and Lou from last season were good characters, and they were cops. Didn't like the cops in season 1 for the most part either (Lou was ok)

I'm kinda disappointed with how they resolved Ray's arc. All of us were hoping for something bigger or grander. Instead Ray went out on a whimper.

Yeah, I was extremely surprised with Ray's death. I was hoping he would get his revenge and play a part in Emmit and Varga's downfall, But I guess his death will be the catalyst for that now. Nikki is going to be out for blood when she finds out.

Once again I enjoyed Varga's scenes the most in this episode. His verbal sparring with Gloria in the office was the highlight of the episode for me, He actually showed signs of being worried and not being fully in control for the first time this season after that encounter, Especially after finding out that he and Gloria share the same trait of having no digital footprint.

It was a solid episode despite Ray's death not having the full impact it should have had.

I was hoping for some redemption with his character. He never got to crawl out of his bitterness.

I'm mostly drawn to Gloria, I like her character and the actress
Really? I find her the least entertaining on the show. They really haven't gone back to show her home life in some time. She seems the least flushed out as a character to me?

The show isn't that focused on them, and I don't see a point in giving small town cops a big personality just for the sake of the show. I like having normal characters like that. Not everyone has to be a memorable character. It's like saying shows can't have an average Joe as a character. She's a cop from a tiny town with a population of 1,000 and the police station didn't even use computers. What would you except, some sort of wacky Melissa McCarthy-type character? Thank God we didn't get that.

Really surprised they killed Ray so early. Among all the characters in season 3, I think viewers found him to be the most likable and the character they were rooting for the most. Sure he was a loser but he was a very lovable underdog.

I also think Ray's perception of injustice and unfairness towards his brother is unfounded. Ray (stupidly) begged Emmett to trade the stamp for the car when they were young. And Emmett's success in life wasn't because of the stamp (clearly) because the stamp is still with him, meaning he didn't sell the stamp early in his life to finance his business. So even if Ray did get the car and the stamp when they were young, Emmett would still grow up to become successful.

And it also shows Ray's irrationality when Emmett finally gives him the stamp but Ray refuses to accept it. Maybe deep down subconsciously Ray knows that he's just using the stamp as an alibi for his failures in life and without that excuse, he won't have anyone or anything to blame anymore.

I don't know, he kind of seemed like a vindictive asshole towards his brother. And, hiring a dumbass, drug addict con that he didn't even know that well to pull a job which ended in the death of an old guy for no reason wasn't the most endearing thing. I'd say Nikki was the most likable.

Yeah Ray was all that and he did a lot of stupid and despicable stuff, but I still rooted for him.

The Chief is one of the main characters in the show -she had an entire episode dedicated to her and her step father. I don't think they've intentionally written her as uninteresting -she's just turned out that way.

Part of the fun in a show like Fargo is the quirkiness of all its characters and it's attention to detail and so on, so yeah, having an intentionally 'average Joe' type character is kind of odd. But like I said, I don't think she's being written to be intentionally average, the part just isn't blossoming like maybe it came out on paper is all. Personally I'm starting to think she's just poorly cast tbh, combined with a bit of lackluster writing.

I'd say this last episode was the weakest of the season. Didn't like seeing Varga interact with the cops either. He got shut down by them a couple of times and seemed to stumble a bit. I felt like it's too early in the season to show him up like that, even if it was just a tiny bit. I like him as more of a specter that plays the background like a shadow.

Rays death was just flat out dumb -the way he died, not the fact that he died.

Some things I liked: the IRS guy scene -it was short but was well played imo. Loved the intro, when Varga speaks he just makes things sound interesting. Sy's reaction as the story came to a head was great lol.

I don't mind Ray's death, but I didn't like the way it happened. He should've just taken the stamp. The glass breaking and sticking in his neck like that, plus him being dumb enough to pull it out, and then Emmit just watching. I just didn't like that scene at all really.

I really liked the bad guys last season, this season the main bad guy is mostly annoying to me and their role in the plot seems more implausible.

How the hell is Emmet going to get out of this? Gloria is going to read through this Nikki bullshit. Vargas can't hold his own against her and she basically ignores his rhetoric. Vargas has proven that he goes straight to the family of his threats. He wanted to do something to that IRS guy's family. Vargas is a wolf and his back is going to be against the wall. Gloria only has her boy now. What's going to fucking happen?

Also, RIP Ray. I was shocked and his death felt real. Great job because I couldn't watch all of it. It was unnerving.
