Let's talk about Full Metal Jacket.

I'll cut to the chase. When considered as a whole, it is in the running for my least favorite Kubrick film.

I could watch the first half over and over again. If I had to watch the first AND second half, I'll decline the whole thing.

The first half of this film is absolutely fantastic. The second half of this film is barely even average. The second half of this film I consider to be inferior to Hamburger Hill, let alone Platoon.

With the first half of this film, Kubrick made the definitive movie about bullying. It's a masterpiece. I wish the movie had ended there, because once Matthew Modine ships off to Vietnam, the film has a number of issues.

His time in the press office is boring, and allows the more annoying aspects of his character to shine through.

Once he's in the field, it was obvious that it wasn't shot in Vietnam or anything like it. It looked like some deserted British cement factory with three palm trees stuck there to pass it off as Southeast Asia. It didn't have the feel of Vietnam at all, and I was surprised a perfectionist like Kubrick would fail in presenting his setting, given how masterfully he has done that in the past.

The portion with the interviews of the platoon where they are talking to the camera...it's terrible. It's filler. It's the worst few minutes of any Kubrick film ever, hands down.

What does this boring, static scene add for the characters that wasn't shown in or couldn't have been added through the characters interacting with each other? It was really important to show how these guys act when they know they're on camera?

Once they're dealing with the sniper, the quality picks up again, though nowhere near the level of the first half in boot camp.

I think the third quarter of this film is Kubrick's worst work of his career. It's unfortunate that it's included in the same film as the first half of the movie.

Never seen it. Have watched clips on YouTube of the boot camp that really make me want to watch it though. When I do watch it someday maybe I'll stop with Gomer Pyle blowing his brains out.

I never liked the first half - all the actors stink it up except Ermey. Some nice quips there

Definitely Kubrick's worst

It's true, the first half is amazing, second half is weak as fuck. I'm convinced R. Lee Emery's performance (along with Vincent D's) are huge factors in the first half being so eventful...how do you go on after they dieded? The second half feels like "what the fuck are we doing here?".

Some of the greatest lines came out of the movie...

Etc etc...

cut out the 2nd half? Then we would never have the "me so horrrny -- me love you long time" quote

All right. Watch the first half of Full Metal Jacket, then press stop, and cue up the 2 Live Crew.

Not filler. I think its meant to symbolize the differences between the intensity of bootcamp, and the intensity of war. Both are intense, both have their own worries but both have their own individual anxieties. Neither moment preserves safety, and thats what I think the film is all about. The safety of men, even in this seemingly safe environment of bootcamp you yourself end up becoming the monster of war. ORRRRR I didnt get enough sleep, whatever either way GFY!

I get where you're coming from, but for me, the real value of the film lies in the juxtaposition between the "kill, kill, kill"-hype of the boot camp, the idiotic posturing of the guys in the field, and finally the bleak nihilism of the last act. All parts if the movie only archieves full depth when seen in light of the others for me.

I always thought they screwed up by having pile kill the drill sergeant and himself. After all that suffering and work he was showing improvement and he threw it all away. Would have been so much better if he'd have went to war with them. Maybe play a part similar to the white dude with the m60.

3rd greatest war time flick only behind Thin Red Line and Apocalypse Now.

I'm with ts. The boot camp half is amazing and the 'Nam half is meh af.

"Eyes Wide Shut" kinda sucked ass....IMO, Kubricks wort.

Kubricks 1st film might just be my favorite of his:

Full Metal Jacket is in my top 5 war films of all time though. It's a classic.

The acting is so shitty, Ermey is the best actor in the flick.
All respect to Kubrick, but in his efforts to maintain realism, he hired people who read lines very woodenly.

No offense, but I think that idea is dumb. Pyle was supposed to be mentally broken to the point of suicide, not to become the perfect soldier.

Yea I'm with you, I enjoy the first half.

The second half is meh.

I also like the part where the black guy refers to his dick as "pure Alabama blacksnake".
