Eyes Wide Shot is far more interesting and deeper than just a film about a shadowy group of powerful people who control everything from behind scenes.
People blow it out of proportion but I do think a large part of the movie is real. Like the weird elite sex parties, the weird satanic rituals, the sex trafficking and underage prostitution. All that is real.
Kubrick's original version of the film was severely cut and he protested loudly about it for artistic as well as other reasons before dying shortly afterwards.

I don't care for Cruise or Kidman, but I LOVE this film (I guess that's a testament to the excellence of Kubrick) I watch it every year around Christmas time.
I can't put my finger on it but something ominous is going on from the very beginning. You just feel like something is weird, but also dream like. It's fantastic.
I believe it was Mr. Cranky's theory in his review of the movie. His theory was that Kubrick wanted to look at Kidman naked before he dies. Most realistic theory I've heard.

Nicole Kidmans father ran a peeedo ring irl which makes her starring in this film a lot more crazier imo

Movie would have never been made today. They used all skinny models for nude scenes. The blue haired weirdos would claim racism and slam the pretty models wanting chubby ugly ones of color instead.

This movie is a violation of the mind. So much fucking talking, so little learned. So pathetic. Soooo slow

Chapo Trap House’s theory that the movie makes way more sense if Kidman and Cruise’s characters had never before had sex is hilarious. I like that one.

well thats fucking depressing. never seen it tbh, dont think i wanna.
That's a theory but it's open interpretation. They don't have some scene where they are literally just handing their kid over to some men. In fact the way it's done makes me question the whole thing because if that's what you are doing why are you doing it in some public place with people everywhere instead of just driving your daughter to a private mansion and keeping everything very secret.

Have you checked out any of Rob Ager’s videos on it? I like his work a lot, especially his analysis of the Shining.

I don't even remember this movie
You should check it out, great film. Even if you like Kubrick though, it’s not a movie that blows you away at first watch like the Shining or Full Metal Jacket. I think it gets better with subsequent viewings.

I don't care what anyone says about you, you are okay in my book (from now on)

Favorite theory: Kidman was in on it the entire way. G-----ing her daughter and all. This grades her performance as one of the greatest by any actress, of all time imho.

Wasn't obvious to me for at least 15 years. Initially saw this in my early 20's with my ex in a theater when we were in the hot and heavy honeymoon phase. She left the theater in love with the "Red Shoe Diaries" interpretation and I was turned off by Cruises lack of machismo. By the time they got to the 2nd party I was ready to walk out of the theater. The totally abstract last line of dialogue and abrupt ending was such a turn off for me back then.

The amount of clues hidden by Kubrick is on par with The Shining imho. Kubrick and Carpenter are the two most prominent American directors that have consistently made films that age better than when I first saw them.

I'v always felt there was something off about about her character. Her response when he tells her the whole story fits with your interpretation too she is "upset" but she also says little and does not condemn.

It's actually a fascinating study of her character in different scenarios.

As a bored lonely trad wife who is frustrated and experimenting with drugs and her own sexuality as an easy outlet for her struggles, she gives an ok performance that is kind of run of the mill, been seen and done before by many others.

As a member of or simply a prospect for admission, she gives a stunning, flawless performance that allows to you pick apart every scene and line of dialogue over multiple viewings. The deepest levels of her character are so apparent in the first scene (party) and the double entendres like her asking Bill if he knew anyone at the party and in particular, the lovely chat she had while dancing with Szandor basically gives it all away.

Only if your eyes are wide shut (wink, wink) could you miss it.

Apple Store's digital copy is R. Boo.

I think I saw Criterion is International version, and also read no extra minutes, but omits digital spectators.
