Not at all surprising. They remade Cracker and basically didn't change a single thing, dialogue, camera angles, the whole bit, and it sucked donkey dick.

So much relies on cultural context and the actor himself that creates the role, especially when it comes to the sense of humour, whether it be the UK, Canada, or the US. They're all somewhat different.
