I often do Front Squats as an assistance lift, but I've only done Hacks (real ones, not that gay sled-thing) a couple times. For those of you who've done both, what differences have you noticed between the two, other than grip?

seems that front squats put more pressure at the bottom of the lift, while a hack lift is harder towards the top of the motion..

different points of the quad are stressed....both are good lifts

Front Squats are a great lift. Best done on a Smith machine to avoid injury. Front squats with a loose bar can put undo pressure on the mid / upper back area, especially if you have strong legs and need to use alot of weight.

Ban now

The difference? One you hold on your front and other you hold with your hands, arms extended, and that's quite a difference there my friend. Lot more grip taxing than front squats. But basically as someone said, hack squats seem to put more pressure on the legs at the top and front squats do more at the bottom areas and coming up.

I say front squats are better cause they can translate over to stronger cleans. Hack squats are pretty fun though, I just did them for the 1st time last squat session and it was a nice change up.

...did someone just suggest using a Shirley machine to prevent injury?

I cant stand you. No, I fucking hate you. You probably play table tennis with a helmet. I hope you get trapped under your smith machine and die.

Both variations are great. Hack squats are especially good if you're training home without a rack. Ofcourse Zercher variations are more manly....but that's a whole different story. Generally you'll be able to do more with hacks.

Die you piece of crap!

I really dislike hacksquats but then again I hate all squating movements. Front squats are something I would really like to start doing at some point.

I've even read some people claiming Front Squats are more useful than Back Squats.
