Jon took this completely out of context likely because deep down he knows he’s guilty of that kind of behavior. However, Stipe was referring to his own kids seeing him talking smack about people in fight build ups and acting like an asshole as something he’d rather not get involved in because they may look at their father and think, “He’s an asshole.”

Maybe someone reposted the clip in contrast to/talking shit about Jones, Jon saw it in that context and assumed Stipe was talking about him.
