Forum preservation thread

Maybe we should have a "Muay thai scene guide" thread, with info about the top stadiums, promotions, weight classes, fighters, where/how to watch, scoring explained briefly, and links to where to find more info about muay thai (my favourites personally: MuayTies, Siam Fight News Fb , Petchyindee Academy Fb and a couple more youtube channels that i follow).

I mean once you get into the scene and start understanding it a little bit, it's not that more to follow than kickboxing, especially this year with all the new televised shows that also stream live on the internet sometimes.

In kickboxing glory and K-1 are easy to follow and maybe enfusion, superkombat and maybe a few japanese promotions aswell, but the chinese promotions are more difficult.

In muay thai there are just much more options and more fights so might take more time but it's also more available once you know where to look.

I think most posters on this forum understand that the Thai fighters don't get as much attention as they deserve and that English language media doesn't cover stadiums fights.

It seems like Mauy thai 2000, Mauy Ties and the Thailand sub forum are the only places one can find out about the best Mauy Thai fighters. And those sources don't really give much context. For example people post fight videos in the Thailand forum but often it is hard to tell who is who.

I mentioned this before but it would be great if instead of complaining about undeserving hype more threads or posts were made about specific fighters and what they accomplished and how they fight etc

Yeah well this forum is really weird.

Some people here seem to be only interested in arguing about the same shit over and over and calling out people.

Luckily for me there are helpful people here who are willing to give information.

Stadium MT is a very niche and obscure sport for non Thais.

I actually think these arguments are pretty funny, because it is the same thing over and over from the same people. The best thing is they more or less agree on the same thing ( stadium Mauy Thai is underappreciated) but argue about it anyway like it was a profound difference in religious scripture.

kickboxing fans does not equal kickfighting fans.

And Takeru and Tenshin fights are more entertaining by a long shot, even though competition is questionable at best. Add social media precense, better production and promotion to it, and there you go.

I knew this was coming which is why I wrote the second half of my post. You were oblivious to that? This isn't an acceptable answer. Same goes for @Kanka

I'd like to make some callouts. @everyonebesidesCocaandJt

What the hell is wrong with you guys. How are you going to go and make DISGUSTING joke about people with MT backgrounds. Do you get off on that stuff?? Thats disgusting. You all have so much privilege you don't even know what to do with it. How do you all have fun taking and making joke about the poor an midgets?? 6 MILLION Thais were denied kickboxing contracts and you're going to go and disrespect all of them. It's just wrong. Especially the manlet jokes. Do you all even know anybody with that disease?? No probably not, but news flash they are the sweetest people I know; and clearly a lot nicer than you all.

It wasn't long ago I thought you and Aberudder were about equals. Things changed fast.

This threads not working, I'm still reading this shit on other threads!

This was made a few hours ago for fuck's sake. I see no continuation in the Thailand or China threads.

Not gonna happen and you know it... Pointless thread

I will have no problem keeping all my anger to this thread and apparently I'm a third or half the reason this place is (was) going to shit.

Hi everybody, very new to kickboxing and MT but I've fallen in love with it more and more over the past year, and this forum has helped a lot. That being said...

Why on earth does such a niche sport feel so splintered? Why is everybody always arguing between Muay Thai and kickboxing? It feels as silly and counter-productive as vicious debate between fans of French Open tennis and Wimbledon tennis. But maybe I'm off base.

Anyway, I would LOVE to get somewhat of a guide on how to follow Muay Thai. Glory and K-1 seem pretty easy to watch (those are the big 2 in kickboxing right?), but I am at a loss on how I should watch great Lumpinee fights/what fighters to look out for.

Hey dude. Welcome to the club! This place definitely has its quirks. Glory and K-1 are the best ones to get started with, but there are also some awesome Chinese promotions like Kunlun. For Muay Thai to get info go to muaythai2000.com and for fight videos videos you have to subscribe to a bunch of youtube channels. The main one is muay thai daily.

Most relevant fights are posted here after the fact. I've never looked into streaming since I can't watch live anyway

The only other places I look (besides this forum) are SiamFightNews and muaythai2000

I don't think muay thai is THAT hard to follow but it does lack introductory channels (eg mma fans learning about kickboxers from mma sources) or any sort profiling for fighters, you just have to learn as you go

I thought sherdog had always been this way. same shit different characters.

You are definitely off base. Muay thai and kickboxing are totally different sports, clay and grass tennis are still both tennis. Big, insurmountable difference.

Welcome mate.

for streams there is this page where you can watch thai TV <http://www.adintrend.com/hd/ch33> but I wouldn't care to watch it live as it airs at around noon/early morning in the western world. what I do is check "Muay thai program" at muaythai2000 so I know when there are big fights then when the day comes I avoid spoilers and watch them at night on youtube. only when I have free time then I'll look for hidden gems at muay thai daily channel but that's not very often, unfortunately.

once you get familiar with a few top fighters and which days are the "big" muay thai days (weekdays mostly) and where to look for info (siamfightnews FB mostly) it's really not that hard to follow. check the "Stadium champions" session on muaythai2000 and get in touch with some of the ranked guys.

a good way to start watching the best fights of recent times is to take a look at Kanka's post from this morning <http://forums.sherdog.com/threads/r...rom-thailand.2961757/page-182#post-128857609> I personally recommend the Sangmanee vs. Tanonchai fights (they've fought nine times already but the last one was something from out of this world); if you wanna watch pure insanity then check out Pornsanae and if you wanna watch something that can only be seen in the stadiums then check out the clinch war Seksan vs. Rotlek.

This forum has had a Kickboxing vs Muay Thai thing going on litterally the whole time I've been here. I can't imagine it going away...

Incase you are not aware this stems from people claiming japanesse kickboxing is different from muaythai because they do not use thai customs or thai/gambling scoring which also happens to be just about every international muaythai organization as well. But somehow because knockout takes place in japan it is not muaythai according to some on this forum

Of all the silly non-issues on this forum this one is the most baffling.

Japanese kickboxing has always claimed to be directly influenced by, but separate from muay thai. Heck, the very word "kickboxing" is an invention by Japanese promoters in the 1960's that refers to the ruleset that was adopted by Oyama karateka who suffered defeat against nak muays and thus sought to take up regular full contact fights with gloves. There is very limited differentiation from muay thai in terms of rulesets and techniques (besides a token preference for boxing and low kicks as opposed to clinchwork and elbows).

The distinction is largely ignored even by Japanese people except in a philosophical sense, since the overarching goal and point of "Japanese kickboxing" is to produce a fighter that can "defeat muay thai" under muay thai rules. Many Japanese fighters who are effectively thai style identify as Japanese kickboxers due to gym lineage and philosophy. For example, Sato Yoshihiro had quite a few muay thai fights and was billed as having a "thai-like style", but identifies as a Japanese kickboxer to the extent of literally writing essays titled "I hate muay thai".

This is all the more trivial since the very word "kickboxing" is dying out in Japan. The AJKF (which was the primary kickboxing promotion) died out in the late 2000's. Japanese kickboxing is now being completely replaced by "K-1" fights that feature no elbows and increasingly limited clinchwork.

So to summarize. This is something that was around and apparent for decades, hit the peak of its existence in the late 1990's and is now fading away. You might as well be incited about Y2K.

If the rulesets and techniques are nearly identical, if the only major difference is philosophical, then how is it a different sport?
