Forrest Griffin is criminally underrated

Forrest was an excellent grappler that always chose to stand and bang, despite the fact he had no power and an average chin... that turned to glass after a couple too many wars. It was really a bizarre choice on his part, but it made him a millionaire so who am I to judge?

His cardio and size were his A-level traits. Everything else...

No, Shogun was not at the top of his game. He fought injured (had ACL surgery after the fight) and gassed inside 2 rounds (Shogun was known for having great cardio).

When Shogun was in better shape this happened:

EARLY STOPPAGE !

Skill-wise he's below all of them.
Ahhh. So you're not debating where he ranks by accomplishments, but instead the hyper-subjective "how good I think he is / his skills are".

I wonder if those who you're arguing with are also debating this? If so, I'll shut up now.

Actually, I'll shut up now anyway :) enjoy!

Nothing more objective than how a fighter performs throughout his career.

Belts and championships can be tricky. Serra was champ. Ferguson wasn't. Bisping was champ, Romero wasn't.

Even a low tier fighter can win a belt if given a chance. You know what no low tier fighter can do? Be consistent.

He was a average fighter with some good game plans, even if his fight iq was poor at times.

The Shogun and Rampage wins were impressive and planned well picking on the weaknesses of the opponents, ie Shoguns gas tank when pressured and Rampage's lack of ability to check leg kicks.

He definitely overachieved in his career though.

And yet I'd argue that the belt means something. I'm a huge Arona fan, but I have a hard time ranking him above Forrest in a "Top 20 LHW GOAT" list. Even though he beat Wandy in that epic GP.

But what you have effectively done is changed the criteria ever-so-slightly to remove the accomplishments. And so yes, using the criteria as you define it (the way I understand your comments), I would also rank Arona above Forrest.

And that is exactly why how one defines the criteria being used is both more interesting and more important/valuable than just an answer.

But you know, fuck all that, I've changed my mind; Arona > Forrest. How you like that ;)

didn't he get knocked the fuck out by keith jardine and crieded?

also wasn't he on TRT?

still loved the fact that he destroyed prime shogun and had rogan on suicide watch

I mean of course belts are factors. But when you have a mid-tier fighter winning a belt people tend to overrate them because then the reasoning becomes "Hey, but he won a belt".

That's why I think Forrest is so overrated by some. They just focus on Forrest being champion and beating Rampage and Shogun, but ignore the context of those fights and the rest of his career. They may even put him above fighters who had better resumes.
