Former UFC fighter Nam Phan’s speech

I know he’s an adult and he’s potentially made some poor choices such as having wars in sparring instead of in the ring where it matters.

But it does serve as a stark reminder of the long term health implications of this and many other combat sports. I see things like this and feel guilty there isn’t more support out there for some of these guys yet unless you happen to be buddies with Dana.

I’ve over the years reduced talking bad about fighters too much as the fact they get in there and put their health on the line for our entertainment (+cash/fame/glory) deserves a lot of respect.

I thought maybe it was a joke but he's speaking like that in every video...

Strange how it can impact some people and not others.

Chris Leben is known for being in slug fests and absolute wars, is still competing now for bare knuckle fc yet his speech seems pretty much unaffected. But I’d say he has taken more damage fighting than Nam Phan.

Must be the sparring.

Chris was never accused of being a mental giant since birth, though. He's going to fly under the radar for a while.

I feel bad for him. Hopefully he's still living a good life though.

He was one of those fighters that always brought it. Very fun fighter to watch. He's got a warrior's spirit and seems like a nice guy too.

thats just an idiotic statement.

you bitter that you scored lower in school then your local asian?
Ah yes I remember it like it was yesterday, when the school published the score and the Asian scores higher. I knew that day I would never get into the top university.

<{1-8}>

I’m surprised everytime I hear him speak. How is that even possible?

His body goes to sleep right away. Its the cumulative shots that does the damage. Guys with great jaws that eat a ton of punches are at bigger risk than guys that just get knocked out right away. Everyone is different but thats generally true.

I dont get why people running the gyms allow that shit. Like there should be a big 'no gym wars' policy.
Not sure where he was training, but he had his own gym for a long time. In addition to the Garcia fights he'd already been knocked out by JZ Calvacante and taken a beating in one of his Sengoku fights.

I remember him as the guy jerking himself off in the TUF house

<BC1>

There was a thread about Nam's speech I think a year or so ago. It's been like that for some years now I think. If you check out his Youtube channel you can see/listen he's been talking like this for some time. I think he owns a gym so I hope he's doing alright financially and stuff.

I remember this.

And this lol.

Samman was awesome. I did not like him on TUF but liked him pretty much immediately when he actually made his debut, I recall his interviews being very good and seemed a lot more chill than how he was on TUF. Was rooting for the guy post TUF and he was on quite a good streak and was looking to be a good prospect but his personal problems stopped him from achieving more. Sad story.

And some people are just built to take punishment better. Mark Hunt and Roy Nelson shouldn't have any brain cells left. They both took numerous beatings from 230-265 pound HWs who hit a lot harder than the guys Pham fought. Or look at the boxer George Chuvalo. In 93 fights over 22 years (including major beatdowns by Foreman, Frazier and two fights with Ali), he was never knocked down. He's still able to speak and think well.
