Everything that Mayweather is doing is totally legal given Conor McGregor's contractual constraints with the UFC, and ZUFFA.
In regards to the legality of all of this, I made a comment in another thread. I'll just copy, and paste my words here.
Someone asked the following:
Here is ZUFFA's contract:
3.5 During the Term, ZUFFA shall have the exclusive right to promote all of Fighter's bouts and Fighter shall not participate in or render his services as a professional fighter or in any other capacity to any other mixed martial art, martial art, boxing, professional wrestling, or any other fighting competition or exhibition, except as otherwise expressly permitted by this Agreement.
I responded with the following, which I think is totally legitimate advice:
So far, Floyd Mayweather, and McGregor can sidestep this for promotion purposes by having only Money Mayweather, and Mayweather MMA to promote the idea of a fight between himself, and Conor McGregor.
Conor McGregor can't be sued for what another individual is saying about him. Thus, this fight can first be promoted as an idea of a fight between these two people. Then, once the actual fight is signed, and a contract exists for the fight, the official fight promotion between the relevant parties can begin.
As of right now, the UFC, or Zuffa, cannot stop Money Mayweather nor Conor McGregor from entertaining the idea of fighting each other. Zuffa would basically be trying to sue Money Mayweather, and McGregor for a "thought crime".
All Dana White, and Company can do is what they have been doing, which is deny all rumors of a fight until the fight has officially been signed, and controlled by ZUFFA.
So, Conor McGregor wins. Money Mayweather win this. End of story.
