Social Florida Removes Rainbow Crossing That Honoured Pulse Nightclub Shooting Victims

It really just comes down to the act of removing it being a political dog whistle to the worst type of bigotry. There is real no reason to remove it other than to cause outrage. Many on the right in this thread see it the same way. It's not a random location. By removing it you are positioning the state in alignment with those view and cause pain for no other reason. Shame that this is where the culture wars get us. Hats off to you guys on the right calling this out too.
So, shouldn't you change your AV?

;)

Because it's a cross-walk. People have to walk across it to get to the other side that may not agree with Gay stuff
- If people think walking a rainbow cross walk would make them gay. Cant imagine of what they think of people that watch MR Olympia

Yeah, I'd say that's a fair characterization.

How could a memorial be more innocuous and unoffensive? It wasn't disruptive. What a beautiful and elegant idea that was. And how is it political, DeSantis? The club was targeted because it was LGBT. So, in this case, it's perfectly proportional to honor it with an LGBT-themed memorial. I suspect every single one of the dead would have approved of it if they could.

I don't mind any personal choice of any person of sexual orientation, except for age related perverts.

I hate that they, LGBT, appropriated the universal symbol/natural occurrence: the rainbow.

In other news of systemic cruelty in Florida, they're now revoking certificates of completion of education for students with disabilities. This is one of the key ways kids with certain disabilities get jobs after HS as some cannot complete a standardized diploma course.

I mean yeah. F*ck disabled kids, amirite?

So you can't complete the work but should still get the diploma?

The paper they were given by name say they completed the work when they didn't.

Instead give them something saying what they did complete.

Going off you being distracted by colors on a crosswalk, I bet you've crashed a Mustang or two, and are now driving you Chevrolegs.
I would say Lamberfeeties, but your broke ass is walking around in them Shaq's from Wal-Mart.
Learn to drive asshat.

Holy fuck.

I think they put the cart before the horse in eliminating it in the way they did, but I don't think it's as bad a move as it sounds long-term. Did you read this part at the bottom of the page?

"The Florida Department of Education says the focus will now be on alternate pathways to completing a high school diploma and this change is needed to “ensure students receive appropriate support and recognition for their achievements.”

The change is an outlier in a legislative session that otherwise championed the rights of students and people with disabilities. Senate President Ben Albritton made increasing the support and services available to people with disabilities the focus of the last session.

Through laws passed last session, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Republican-majority legislature not only increased early detection and intervention for students who have autism, but also created a micro-credential for teachers who work with students on the spectrum.

The legislature also created a new credential that students with disabilities can earn after completing their work placement. These credentials or badges can then be used to seek out post-graduation employment.

In an additional statement after our story was published, the Florida Department of Education wrote:

"It is important to clarify that Florida has expanded diploma pathways for all students, including students with disabilities. With these pathways, Florida’s graduation rate for students reached 89.7% for the 2023-24 school year and has increased year-over-year. Only 2% of students in this cohort received a certificate of completion. Florida law provides multiple pathways to receive a standard diploma, ensuring students earn meaningful credentials upon completing high school:

  • A standard diploma through the traditional 24-credit option, with supports and accommodations as needed.
  • An academic and employment-based diploma option, which allows students to earn credit through a combination of academic coursework and employment experiences.
  • A standard diploma through alternate academic achievement standards and alternate assessment, with modifications, supports and accommodations, which is available for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
  • An 18-credit Academically Challenging Curriculum to Enhance Learning Pathway (ACCEL) with a focus on core academic content areas.
  • An 18-credit career and technical education graduation pathway for students to receive additional career preparation prior to graduation.
In Florida we are proud to be the Education State, and prioritize successful outcomes for ALL of our students, including students with disabilities.""

So, the one issue I'd have with it is that it should not apply to current students who have not had the opportunity to take advantage of the new programs they've instituted because they were only recently introduced. They should not leave these students hanging and they should not have the pressure of trying to adapt to a different way of doing things, but new/younger students should benefit from the available programs.

Yes I did read that stuff, and I dont buy it. Creation of new credentials while erasing ones that have already been working is nonsensical. It's a ruse. I also dont buy the sentiment about them being proud to be "the education State" because their rate of education has fallen with increased privatization. This is a State currently trying to install white supremacist PragerU courses as part of official curriculum, and simultaneously rolling back child labor laws that directly effect students, which will have a negative impact on education. If you ask me this is just another way to weed out disabled students that they consider undesirable, and a credential...for teachers they prefer.

Just for the record, I have passed that rainbow crosswalk numerous times. Noticed when the first time I saw it after they put it in, and after that it never registered. It near the hospital and you pass it if you going to downtown Orlando, if you are coming from the south.
It is like MAGA looking at a photo of 21 Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders, ignore the 20 hot chicks and get mad at the one dude they saw. MAGA is fucking weird, the constant pearl clutching has to be fucking exhausting.
I think they should have left the crosswalk. But what about the constant pandering? That has to be just as exhausting. And I think it feeds a lot of backlash. I could give two shits about the male cheerleaders, but they look fucking ridiculous, and they are the type that brings negative stereotypes for Gay men. I know plenty of Gay guys that think the drama queens sashaying around like women are embarrassing themselves. And stop acting like only MAGA thinks its stupid. I am sure most people from both sides are rolling their eyes at it. It doesn't make you "enlightened" to support every stupid fucking virtue signaling garbage thrown at you.

Must be a slow news days in the UK.
