I assume this has been asked before but I haven’t found satisfactory answers. Despite training boxing for more than 6 years and lifting for several years as well, I seem to perpetually have “soft” muscles. Even when I cut weight for fights and look pretty shredded, if one feels my arms or abs, they feel pretty soft. There’s also quite the disparity between when I contract my muscles and don’t, both in terms of “hardness” and definition.
One of the answers I’ve gotten from the internet and youtube is that lifting high weight and low reps would be lead to more muscle hardness. But I almost never lift for reps and I usually don’t go above 5 reps per set for most of my lifts, yet there hasn’t much change in my muscle “density” over the years.
In contrast, there are guys I know who can’t lift as much as me, but feel solid. So my softness doesn’t seem to have a correlation to my actual strength or athletic performance from what I could gather. Or does it?
I guess my question is: does it matter? Is hardness a reflection on potential athletic performance/strength, or is it simply aesthetic? Is it something that could be changed or mostly genetic?
