I think these intelligence agencies have become bigger threats to our way of life than foreign terrorist groups. They toned it down a bit after Snowden exposed them, but now they're back at it.

A pact of five nation states dedicated to a global “collect it all” surveillance mission has issued a memo calling on their governments to demand tech companies build backdoor access to their users’ encrypted data — or face measures to force companies to comply.

The international pact — the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, known as the so-called “Five Eyes” group of nations — quietly issued the memo last week demanding that providers “create customized solutions, tailored to their individual system architectures that are capable of meeting lawful access requirements.”

Only people that do something wrong would have an issue with that.
I am fine with some dude in Langley seeing my porn history.

Fuck that noise. Want access to my data? Get a fucking warrant.

So you have no issue with invasion of privacy rights? It is the government that must demonstrate the onus on why they need to put you under surveillance, not the people that need to demonstrate why they need their civil rights. You'd be fine not doing anything wrong in North Korea as well, as long as the regime gets to dictate what's right and wrong.

If the government wants data, they need to get a court warrant.

No, I have no problem with that invasion of privacy. I think it is worth giving that up to fight crime and terrorism.
Nothing changes in my life if the government collects my data.

Nothing changes until the government doesn't like certain thoughts or behaviors coming from you. You go ahead and voluntarily give up your data. They can get warrants for the rest of us.

Why would the government do that? You know the government is just other human beings.
You or I could be part of it if we liked. We are on the same team or better we are the team.

Why would government abuse their powers? I'm not sure if you're serious at this point.

Governments around the world have been abusing their powers since the dawn of history, to exert better control of the population and gather more power in the hands of the elites. You're not on their team, and the only thing protecting you from that abuse is your civil rights enshrined in the constitution of most democracies. For those voluntarily giving it up, I have no sympathy for any abuse you suffer.

If you were running for public office, would you like some spooks threatening you to vote a certain way or risk getting your porn habits aired to the public? How about if you are denied a public service job because the government doesn't like your political leaning that you expressed in your private communications?

Yes, of course, I am serious.
The difference between historical powers and now is that we live in a democracy so the people in power are held responsible.
And everyone can be a person in power. Just look at the most liveable countries in the World there all have a big government.
The whole US thing about small government and less government in all aspect is incredibly stupid.
It doesn't work its the sort of "socialist" argument of the right. Sounds good on paper but doesn't work in real life.

Without constant vigilance against power grabs and defending checks and balances, a democracy could easily slip into authoritarianism. Have unrestricted backdoor access to private data without any court oversight is a dangerous step. Look no further than Venezuela, the socialist utopia, for a recent example. Germany, Greece, Mexico, and Argentina all had civilian governments overthrown. Unless you're one of the wealthy elites with political connections, you are not on the same team as government. You never were, and never will be.

History repeats itself, and those that refuse to learn from it are doomed to repeat it. You unfortunately, are one of those.

You need to look out for and defend checks and balances. I just don't see how that would apply to your data.
Of course, there need to be clear rules and checks and balances in place how that data can be used.
That needs to be reasonable. But imagine how much organized crime, cartels, terrorism and financial crimes we could stop that way.

Just look at the Russia investigation. As soon as someone looks into those people with any sort of determination.
It is raining down 300-year sentences and guilty please left and right. Or remember the Panama papers.
Those people are stiffing us out of billions of $ every year. And it seems almost everyone with the financial means is doing it.
While a normal guy like myself pays his taxes on time and in the correct amount.

I say open up the data for investigations so that we can go after those people and other criminals.
My porn history being private does nothing for me. Going after those people on the other hand would.

Concurred. They don't follow the Constitution and Joe Citizen believes their efforts are for his benefit.
