First night graplling last night.

I learned this after my first month. Pace yourself. We usually start out doing warmups then drills/scoots for almost a half hour, then we get into the technical part for half hour. By that time I was huffin and puffin to the point that I wanted to vomit. Then guess what, then it was time to roll with the blue and purple belts. I am 5-11 220 Lb (stocky, not ripped) and I was getting thrown around like an empty surfboard at Piahi (Jaws). Well, that is where I learned the following necesseties.

1) Warmups are just that warmups. Don't overdo it in the beginning.

2) When you are mounted or have your opponent in your guard learn to rest while you are on the bottom. I am sure the guy who rode out your RNC was resting. Whenever you start feeling claustrophobia say to yourself in your mind CALM DOWN THIS DOES NOT EVEN HURT THERE IS A WAY OUT.

3) TAP at the first moment you start feeling pain. I used to go in with a big ego but after having my elbow dislocated because I was trying to escape from an armbar resulted in me spending over $3,000 in medical fees. Also, I sat out for 5 months gaining back all the weight I worked so hard to lose. BTW the tuition at the academy was withdrawn from my account wether I was there or not.

4) Set realistic goals. After my first month I had 3. They were to get my body fat percentage down from 18% to 12%, to tap out this particular purplebelt that made me flop around like a MahiMahi whenever we rolled and to make BJJ a part of my everyday life. There were to many times I wanted to go surfing or spearfishing instead but I forced myself to go to class.
