Finishing North South Choke?

Bout time to start doing this choke again. I forgot so much about it. Those two videos above are good, especially the Drysdale one.

And then my appendix attempts to explode and it's no jiu jitsu for about 6 weeks.

This choke is something I've been working on recently and while I can get the setup pretty reliably, I can't finish to save my life. I'm getting my arm wrapped properly (I believe), pushing their head well with my rib cage, moving my body more into the north south position, but when I squeeze I rarely get a tap and when I do it's because I'm producing more of a "crank" than an actual clean choke. Any tips or pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Keep practicing, not easy and won't work on everyone and it's overall a tough choke.

Absolutely. In my experience this and the arm-in guillotine take the longest time to get the feel for when it comes to no gi style chokes.

As others have already suggested- when I feel my students arent drilling the NS choke correctly, once they are in position, I literally pull them down by grabbing their feet- they need to keep going down until they cant anymore (the opponents chin will stop you).

Additionally, once they are in that position, I have them go palm to palm, squeeze, and I push down on their shoulder- that is the downward shoulder pressure/squeeze you need to make the choke more efficient.

Once you do both things, it shouldnt be a neck crank (you were too high) and it should be about a 40-50% squeeze before they tap.

Thanks. Still working on it. I guess it'll be like a lot of other chokes, you have to get it right a few times to get the "feel" of it. It's frustrating not picking it up as quickly as I'd like, but like my dad says, "If it were easy, Jane Fonda would be doing it".
