I wouldn't say Costa after Izzy.

he looks mostly the same. He got the shot after a close win over Romero, so we never got to see him against top fighters really before Izzy

Maybe a hot take, but I think that they aren't as common as people act like they are, often because they are conforting excuse as to why your favorite fighters lost a bunch of fight.
Sometimes fighters just get figured out, they just happen to get a bunch of though matchup in a row, or simply age out.

However, actual exemples I can think off would be Gray Mayniard after the third Frankie fight and Renan Bareo post Dillashaw.

So I actually believe that the beating BJ took during the 2nd and 3rd round against Jon Fitch broke him. That was the right right before the Nick Diaz fight.
He did get beaten down badly with Fitch wrestling him but I think it was only on 3rd round because the fight was a draw. Diaz was the first guy to start the trend of BJ gets dominated on feet in rds 2-3. Gsp had already wrestled him as well. Not saying youre wrong Fitch definitely put it on him.

BJ got a 10-8 in round 1 against Fitch. Iirc he dropped Fitch, took his back and almost finished it with a RNC.
Then Fitch proceeded to win the next 2 rounds 10-9 by grinding BJ down.
That's how the draw was scored.

Dom Reyes after Jones. Was doing great until then. Gave that fight everything he had and didn’t get the W…crushed his spirit.

Gus after the 2nd Jones fight.

Aldo after the Conor KO. Seemed shell-shocked and never got the opportunity to regain his confidence in a rematch.

wand vs fujita

even though he won, he was never the same after that fight. immediate loss to cro cop with blood streaming down his pulsating forehead muscles. and then that move to HW permanently fucked up his natural PRIDE MW body type. he was too heavier, too much muscle, not enough swing for the ring. slightly slower. his whole career basically was a succession of constant he will never be the same again type of outcomes. respect.
