Fighters that are so good at just using only one submission

Penn RNC.

I think he caught Pulver in an armbar in both fights but didn't get the finish??? But ended up catching the RNC in the 2nd.

Almost caught Hughes in an inverted leg triangle in that 2nd fight.

I assume you’re talking about BJJ. And I have no idea what subs she has gotten doing that. I don’t actually watch BJJ, or Sub Grappling. It’s not my thing (But I did watch Gillian choke Rose on NYE at Fury 6).

In the UFC she has 1 RNC, 2 armbars, and 1 kneebar. Zero guillotines in her 15 fight pro mma career. And just 7 subs in those 15 fights.

She’s an elite ground fighter. But she can’t get a TD to save her life most fights. She did manage to get Yan down twice (a new personal best in the UFC for Dern) in Dern’s last fight. But still lost by majority decision.

Her TD stats actually did rise from that fight though. She went from under 1/2 a TD all the way up to .61 TD per 15 minutes. So still.. in most complete 3 round fights. She will NOT get a single TD. It’s an amazing stat to me. She only has 5 TD in 10 UFC fights.

I don’t understand how or why she does not train nothing but TD 24/7. Wrestling, Judo, Sanda, Sambo.. Get off the beach lady. Those skimpy bikinis on the beach is great for the oglers.. Not so great for her mma career. Travel to different gyms, and learn how to get a damn TD.

The BJJ accolades didn’t match up with mma reality. I always just picked Dern by Sub. So I took a closer look around two years ago. In her first 5 UFC fights she had 3 subs.. ABC, Cifers, and Randa. A SD over Yoder. And a UD loss to Ribas. So with 4/5 wins with 3 Subs, and her BJJ resume I just kind of expected her to win by sub.

Not anymore.
huh?

Rousey by armbar has to be one of the all-time greats. Like three fights into her career, every one of her opponents knew Rousey would go for the armbar. They must have worked extra hard to defend it in their training. No matter. Rousey by armbar, and usually early in the first round.

Jarl
This. Her MMA career fell off a cliff when she moved away from it to boxing (if you can call it that).

there are really only a few fighters in this category imo. i.e. fighters who basically carry their careers using one submission (i don’t really count rnc, since that’s a common way for gassed fighters to bow out without taking too much damage).

- paul harris: leg locks
- ronda rousey: arm bar
- cody mckenzie: guillotine
- jeff monson (north south choke)

mckenzie had 10 guillotines in a row, and they account for 75% of all his wins. without it, he probably couldn’t have been a pro fighter (though he did win his first fight by tko).

i was not aware that monson had so many north south chokes on his resume. its obviously a go-to move. probably suits his body type, as a 5’9” muscle bound hw.

Jeff Monson - North South Choke
Ronda Rousey - Armbar
Paul Sass - Triangle Choke
OSP - St. Preux (Flue) Choke
Alexey Oleynik - Ezekiel Choke
Rousimar Palhares - Heel Hook

Didn't one fighter get back to back Omoplata subs in MMA? Can't remember who.

Hasn't Bryce Mitchell a few twister subs in his career?

All off the top of my head.

What other ones are there?

A little write up on the fighters I posted.

Monson - 17 north souths in his career. One in the UFC. Defeated Kharitonov and Alex Emelianenko with the north south. Funnily enough, he also submitted Alexey Oleynik but with a RNC. Record: 61 - 26 - 2.

Rousey - 9 armbars in her career. Most armbar finishes in UFC/WEC/Pride/Strikeforce history. Record: 12 - 2

Sass - 9 triangles in his career. Nicknamed the Sassangle. Record: 14 - 2.

OSP - 4 Von Flues in his career, all in the UFC. Has the most by far in the UFC. Record: 26 - 17.

Alexey - 14 ezekiel chokes in his career. Only fighter to ever finish a fight by ezekiel in UFC history, but not just once, twice in the UFC. Record: 60 - 17 - 1

Palhares - 10 heel hooks in his career. Broken many limbs with such maneuver for refusing to let go, but he was/is the king at heel hooks. Record 19 - 12 - 1

Mitchell only has 1 twister.

You don't even have to know grappling to escape. Just boot them in the face. I'd be more afraid of shamrocks heel hook.

Anthony Pettis has 8 submission wins and 6 of them are triangles
Plus one guilitine and one armbar.

Aleksei Oleinik has 47 submission wins, I wouldn’t really put him in this category. He has a wide variety of subs.

He does indeed. But he has more ezekial chokes than any other subs he's recorded. Plus, he's the only fighter to win with one in the UFC...twice in fact.

Ezekial choke is his sub.

I never understood the hatred for "one trick ponies" if anything that's even more impressive. You know what's coming and you still can't stop it!!

I’ve always considered it a compliment. Just like you said, they know it’s coming but they can’t stop it. First time a rolling partner said it, I was mad happy about it. Props to my coaches. Follow their instructions and the success follows.

The first submission that Bas Rutten learned was a guillotine and he was nasty with it, forcing a lot of rope escapes and tapping guys in Pancrase. Evan Tanner also had one of the most underrated triangles.

Damn I always thought toe holds were an ankle lock but he's tacoing that foot pretty bad. Would definitely snap the small bones inside

A toe hold isn't really a foot lock. He's not trying to bend Tank's foot or crunch the small bones. A toe hold is basically a kimura on a foot. Just like a kimura is designed to torque the shoulder rather than bend the wrist - even though it looks like you're crushing the wrist - a toe hold is designed to twist the ankle, so what it damages is the ankle or the knee (whichever is weaker), not the foot itself. What you're seeing is someone resisting a toe hold, and just like the way to fight off a kimura is to try to straighten your arm, the way to resist a toe hold is to try to straighten your leg. The bend is a combination of Tank trying to straighten his leg while Mir is trying to keep his grip on it and twist it.

And fun fact: Ken Shamrock called UFC 41 with Mike Goldberg, so aside from Ken and Tank's rivalry from back in the day, it's cool to think about Mir securing a leg lock while the man calling the action was the first fighter to ever win with a leg lock in the UFC
