Feels bad for Stipe.

Stipe spent 2018 to 2020 fighting dc 3x, waited a year for Ngannou, then 3 for Jones. It's hard to feel bad for someone so inactive.
Was active as fuck till title reign. Think I recall him having eye surgery after the first DC fight.

He didn't get a video package because Carla Esparza whatsherface announced beforehand that it would be her last fight, and Stipe didn't. He deliberately left things up in the air, saying "we'll see"

I think it was a spur of the moment decision to pull the plug just then. And having done so he wouldn't have wanted to have to stick around through a video package, anyways. It was very "that's the news and I am outta here."
This has got to be the most eloquent churched up way of saying Stipe came out for his bag and retired when he got his ass whooped like a thief in the night

He was semi retired for a while.

Ever since he lost to DC imo.
Ever since that fight he has a let's sit on my ass and wait a ts mentality.

UFC didn't forget about him, he basically quit. He could have gotten a fight if he wanted one.

but that was probably his peak and he started to fall.
He was already declining at that time he was 36, already took beating from fights with Struve and JDS, and maybe even more that I don't really remember.

I don't feel bad for him. He showed up for a paycheck and ruined the main event.

Why? No one forced him to do anything. He got a free undeserved title shot and was paid handsomely to take a beating.

Dude is one of the greatest heavyweights ever but he has a rough couple of years.

Was openly disrespected in the first Francis fight. Won that, thank God, but that was probably his peak and he started to fall.
Got KOed by DC after an eye poke. I love DC and glad he became champion but had to hurt.
Was swept aside for Brock when he deserved an instant rematch. Thankfully, Cormier vs Brock never happened.
Stipe got his rematch and won. Won the trilogy but dude looked way different and clearly past his prime.
Got brutalized by Francis. You could see his frustration and he kinda knew he was fucked after the first round.
Was once against swept aside for years. He did not deserve an instant rematch but UFC forgot that he existed.
Was basically dragged out of retirement for Jon Jones.
Got brutally KOed and retired.
Did not even get a video package when Carla Fucking whatsherface was given a tribute by the UFC.

I fully believe Prime Stipe would have given Jones a much tougher fight. Seeing him in the cage last fight was painful as I've been following him since the Fabio mauling. . Pity because he is truly a super nice guy, a role model and a hero even outside the cage. Been a rough couple of years but he is still the UFC HW Goat.
Family man, professional fire fighter, one last big payday. I'm happy for him.

I think the second DC fight was his peak. Not physical prime, but career wise it was his peak.

In hindsight it does seem pointless. This fight could've happened a year and some change ago. Jones does things on his timeline and with whom he wants. He has a genius fight iq in and out of the fight, the ultimate bad guy, untouchable. Stipe is in a weird quasi retirement stage for seemingly the last 4 years and somehow this is the biggest and most anticipated HW fight. Man

Shouldn't feel bad for him.. most of his losses , many people make excuses for them. Against dc they said it didnt count because of the eyepoke and he was supposedly too old vs Francis and Jon .He's called the ufc heavyweight goat for beating up old and washed up fighters, Francis that was being coached by lopez and dc after dc had back surgery. If anyone else had this resume people would be questioning them but Stipe gets the benefit of the doubt. People also frequently talk about dc eye poking him in the first fight but conveniently leave out the fact that dc was eye poked bad in the 3rd fight and fought most of that fight only being able to see out of one eye. Stipe also had a huge reach and height advantage over dc. Part of the reason Stipe was mentioned as the ufc heavyweight goat is because he set the record for title defenses but look at who he fought. Two of his three title defenses were against worn and torn JDS and Overeem.

I am sure he feels disappointed and frustrated, he knows he would have done better in prior years but he has nothing left to prove, he has a lot of wins over top names (though many weren't in their own prime, either to be fair). He definitely got a solid pay day on his way out the door so he should be happy there too.

I don't think he was there strictly for a cash grab. You don't put in that amount of work adding muscle mass etc simply to waltz in for a check. He truly thought he could win. When proven incontrovertibly wrong, he pulled the plug.

Imagine receiving a contract and a few mil out of nowhere to go there for like 10 minutes. He didnt expect to earn that kind of money anymore.
I bet hes pretty happy overall

He showed and got his money. People want to be mad about the main event being ruined be mad at Jon for ignoring his responsibility to unify the title just because he thinks he's bigger than the sport.

To be honest he got off kinda light.

He wasnt knocked out or severely injured. Even after all those elbows he still was able to go 2 more rounds

It sucks more for the fans who hoped to see him in good form.
He is a pro firefighter now, not a pro people fighter.
