That wasn't like a fluky finish. Mir simply had no answer for Carwin's attack. If you think that Mir would have likely won a rematch, congratulations--you're probably the only one.

Once again, ignoring multiple variables. Would Mir be that passive against the cage in a rematch? Carwin showed that he doesn't have the best cardio, striking defense, and even his wrestling never came to fruition inside of the octagon. Mir hits hard, has more technical ability on the feet and better cardio (if we're talking about around that time anyway, his cardio actually was actually decent for a HW)

Counting out Mir is idiotic. Would it surprise me if the betting lines were uneven? Not really. It's not out of the realm of possibility for Carwin to win, and there are also goofs like you in the general public that think "BIG MUSCLE MAN WIN BY KNOCKOUT BEFORE, HE NO LOSE AGAIN"

In no actual fight does anyone have a 100% chance, and generally in a fight between contenders, even fringe contenders, and even guys who are at a massive stylistic disadvantage, the guy who is less likely to win, has a decent chance. When I say I was clearly overrated Mir in retrospect, that doesn't mean I'm saying, "he would have no chance in a rematch." I'm saying, my estimation of the odds going into the fight were pretty clearly wrong. Mir's chances in an immediate rematch against Carwin would probably be something like 25%. Not likely, but as improbable as a coin coming up head's twice in a row. Not something that would shock anyone.

I have no problem with Mir in reality. Fun fighter to watch. It's just that if you think he's the second best fighter in the history of the sport and someone else who knows a lot more about MMA than you thinks he's a long-time fringe contender, you gotta find some explanation. Also, note how people don't want to deal with my actual comments--Mir has generally been at the fringes of contention, he's an exciting fighter, had a long career, etc. That's too reasonable so they fabricate ridiculous claims and attribute them to me so they can argue with those.

I'd like to place him higher but looking at some names on the lists it's hard to justify top 10. 15-20 sounds about right, but I don't feel like putting my own rankings together.

You can say that again. I had this one conversation with him where he claimed communism was true freedom and that national libertarianism would be tantamount to enslaving us all. He really appears to enjoy turning shit completely upside down. I can't understand how anyone can think of him as a good poster, but maybe it's easier to buy into the "nicest funklord" thing when he hasn't taken pot shots at you on a thread he hasn't previously posted at all.

Libertarians should stop confusing the enforcement of property rights through coercion as freedom. True communism aka anarchism is freedom, it just is an impossibility or would be accompanied by abject poverty as well. But having everything thing owned =\= freedom. Libertarians should really change their name to propertarians.

I remember discussing Mir with CarloSpiceyWeiner (another fanatical Mir fan). He insisted that I had said that Mir wasn't a top-50 HW. The archives were working then, but he still couldn't put up. The real difference was that I had Mir in the lower part of the top 10 and he had Mir in the middle of the top 10. That meant that even though he was a huge Mir fan and he insisted that I hated and underrated Mir, our actual difference was just that I had a couple of guys ranked higher than him at the time. That should have just led to a civil discussion about those couple of guys and Mir. But that would be out of proportion to the passion he felt toward Mir and the passion he felt in his disagreement with me so he had to lie. That's what we're seeing from these other guys.

I think Bas is pretty overrated, to be honest. Good striker, but a small HW with terrible wrestling by modern standards. Didn't beat any great HWs (and I'm also skeptical of Pancrase in generation l). I think at his best he loses badly to everyone I put on the list, and some I didn't (including Mir!). I wouldn't argue much with Sylvia or Couture over AA, but I think he was better and had a better career than either. Hunt's record is just too shitty for me to put him there, though he has had a brutal schedule, and he has his share of good wins.

Agree on bas, never understood him as a top HW, wins over randleman and some slap fights are not enough, even if he is an amazing mma personality.

Must be the tone in which we discuss him or something but it's hard to tell when most of your posts are having to address what people said you said years ago. I sympathize with the missing posts in the archives after changeover, but it reaches a point where it's put up or shut up.
