For a long time, I'd say
The Deer Hunter, but over the years, that film has not so much lost its magic as
Full Metal Jacket has just impressed me more and more and hit me harder and harder over time and over rewatches. It's Kubrick, so big surprise it's a masterpiece, but especially having been able to teach it in film classes and break it down with students, I just can't get over how fucking
perfect it is to the note, to the frame. Just something like the sequence of shots from the over-the-shoulder with Pyle smirking at Hartman's crassness, then the "choke yourself" bit, then him standing back up no longer enjoying himself...the precision of the camerawork, the genius of the editing, the harrowing nature of the story from boot camp to war...Kubrick seriously has no competition. Best war films?
Paths of Glory and
Full Metal Jacket are in the top 10 maybe in the top 5. Best historical epic?
Spartacus is in the mix at the top. Best period piece?
Barry Lyndon is #1 with a bullet. Best satire?
Dr. Strangelove is #1 with a bullet. Best horror film?
The Shining is #1 with a bullet. Best sci-fi film? Shit,
2001 isn't just #1 with a bullet, it might just be the greatest fucking movie ever made regardless of genre!
Now for my hot take to piss people off:
Apocalypse Now isn't just overrated, it's legitimately bad. Coppola seriously made two great films his entire career,
The Godfather and
The Godfather II. Everything else ranges from okay to dog shit.
Come at me, bro.
