Favorite flying insect?

The Dragonfly. We call them "Mosquito-Hawks" down here for a reason and you'll never see anyone from down here kill one either.

Never kill a dragonfly, just shoo them away if they bother you. They KILL mosquitoes.
Never been bothered by a dragonfly. They seem uninterested in people or peoples food. Good guys in my book.

Came to post Mantis but see it's already been mentioned several times. Mantis is my favorite insects not just among flying ones.

I guess Horn beetles are my second favorite flying insects.

I remember several years ago while I'm serving my military service, my section caught two random beetles and put them in the same container. Reason for the capture is that a few of my mates were freaked out by the sound of them flying around in our work area.
We went about doing our stuff and around 30mins or so, I found them mating. We released them shortly after.

We have some pretty cool giant moths around here

Not sure about my favorite, least favorite is the tarantula hawk. Had one in my truck the other day while I was driving, had to make a quick exit of the vehicle…
That's funny, I'd have to say my favorite is the tarantula hawk. Your fear was mostly unfounded, they're very non-aggressive. They would just severely fuck you up if you managed to freak it out enough without a way to get away.

Their size alone makes them feel special, but their colors are unreal. The deep amber wings compliment their iridescent bodies so well, which can be deep velvet green or brilliant glassy blue.

Then you throw in their choice of nursery/baby formula and you got something that sounds like it's from a fantasy novel.
