That’s wonderful. If he wins a belt I’ll be happy for him. I know he doesn’t think it has anything to do with race but it kinda does lol. White South Africa is a product of invasion, colonization, apartheid, and has a rich history of racism. Comparing himself to other Africans and not thinking it could be racist is extremely insensitive and ignorant. There’s a reason why journalists have asked him to revisit and review his comments. Just my opinion.

Ya he did. And he’s been backpedaling and “clarifying”ever since. He didn’t just proclaim his nationality (which is fine), he made a point of slighting other African champs.

Bud, maybe watch the actual interview.... The journalist asked him what the difference was with the other African champs. He just stated the facts that those other fighters don't train and fight out of Africa. That's not a slight, that's just facts. If you can't deal with those facts, you are too sensitive.

History.... With emphasis on history... if you keep holding people to standards from a racist past, you are the one keeping the racism alive. Dricus had nothing to do with apartheid for as far as we know and also shouldn't have to. Apartheid needs to die. Not kept alive by people who insist on applying it to everyhting South African.

It's like comparing any white American to KKK-members or any white German to Nazis. It's just utterly ridiculous and also very racist.

DDP doesn’t bear the sins of what white people generally did in South Africa.

What are the “other Africans” that he say he is comparing himself to?

Is African a nationality or a race?

An individual does not bear the sins of others, even if they are of the same skin color or the sins of their ancestors.

DDP is African, Izzy, Ngannou, and Usman has ancestral roots in Africa but lives else where.

Usman probably is a US citizen, Ngannou probably is a French citizen and Izzy… well you get the idea.

History should never be buried. We can ignore it and forget it or we can continue to learn from it. I choose the latter. I’m not suggesting Dricus should feel guilty for simply being a white South African. I’m just voicing that his comments could be construed as problematic when he brought other Africans into it and suggested that he had more of a claim simply based on his current geography. It’s not like I’m looking for trouble. He opened a can of worms and people have the right to talk about it. I’m not the only one who read his quotes and thought “oh no you didn’t..”.

Sorry I can’t engage with this because this is just way off base. All I can say is words do matter. We have to be accountable for what we say and people have the right to take him to task. It’s late here. You seem like an eager debate bro maybe we can try again tomorrow.
