I was falling down the Wikipedia rabbit hole and read the entry for director Ed Wood.

The guy responsible for Plan 9 from Outer Space served in WW2, was at two of the most brutal battles of the Pacific: Guadalcanal, and Tarawa.

According to Wood himself, he wore ladies underwear beneath his uniform and it helped keep him collected during Tarawa.
