F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules... Thanks Trump.

This is a real travesty for Americans, especially since they are often in situations where they don't have proper competition (the owner of the lines can often be the sole provider available, from what I've heard), and a perfect example of where politicians just screw the people in favor of corporate interests.

for those upset about this.

why didn't any of this bad stuff happen before 2015?

Closing your eyes, holding your hands over your ears and going "lalalalala" doesn't actually make the world go away. There's been plenty of examples, just ask Netflix.

If Obama had been praising Putin while at the same time undermining confidence in our intelligence agencies, you fucking hypocrites would have been calling for his head.
But you hadn't been reprogrammed yet to be in love with Russia.

You assholes are complicit in this.

You can see exactly the sort of commercialisation you'd expect in countries with limited Net Neutrality already.
Portugal (there's some wiggle room in the EU's net neutrality regulation) has mobile internet access plans which are bundled according to application use in much the same way as a Cable TV package. Portugal doesn't have the sort of vertical integration of content production you see with the likes of Verizon or Comcast either.

Yes, that's a terrible scenario, and of course it can get worse than that.

We've had a ruckus made around that one of our mobile carriers offers free data when surfing social media sites/apps on all their plans (just a way to attract customers) which has been criticized nationally for breaking net neutrality and I think it will go up in some EU instance soon. I'm glad that there's been such widespread criticism even when it's something that doesn't affect any user negatively, as it shows how widespread the knowledge of the importance of net neutrality is.

"You" is going to be someone, whether it's you or I or someone else. And for all of the people who aren't on forums, that is going to be even more difficult for them.

What it's not going to be is a letter mailed to your house that specifically discloses what is being limited.
As it is, usage is already limited, say, when you do a google search, it will leave out results it deems irrelevant, but who is to decide what is relevant. Deregulation is going to make this much much worse.

It's already known, for example, that when apple users go to shopping sites, they tend to be able to see only more expensive items, while windows pc users will see mainly cheaper items only. It would be farcical if it weren't so damn orwellian.

Someone had to fulfill Obama's campaign promises.

...is this a 'bbbut Obama' post in a thread about Trump and the FCC supporting a NN appeal

Nope it was a response to a 'bbbut Putin and our intelligence agencies' post.

Trump's stance on net neutrality is obviously shit. But, I do not think that it will impact the life of the average American as long as he stays vigilant and protective of his rights as a customer. The companies will do what the market demands of them. People have become accustomed to their services being one way, and it's going to be extremely difficult to force them to budge and suddenly accept new expenses for services that they have been given for a decade.

We're boned.

But if you had to know somewhere in your mind that this was going to happen with a "pro business" (which means screw you little guy) Administration.
Setting everything up for the *system*. Can't have any resistance and open access communication definitely scares the shit out of them.

They know they've been exposed and getting their asses handed to them lately. They had to do something to try and stop it. This is it.

IMO this is unconstitutional and a clear violation of freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech is the right to articulate one's opinions and ideas without fear of government retaliation or censorship, or societal sanction.

ISP companies essentially are *Societal sanction* agents. We're all fucked. Welcome to seeing, reading, hearing, and learning absolutely nothing other then what big brother wants you think, breathe, eat, drink, sleep and live. And there is no doubt, you will love it.

I love how it's "Trump's FCC." Obviously Trump could have weighed in against the vote, but the fucking cocksucker FCC chair Ajit Pai(former Verizon lawyer) who made the tie-breaking vote against net neutrality was appointed by Obama....this is far from a partisan issue. If anything it's the opposite, showing blatant collusion between both parties in order to pander to corporate interests.

Great post. People will fail to see this, because too many of us our *tribal-minded* into a political party and more concerned with Dem vs Rep. It's sad because its actually what you see littered all throughout this thread and forum for years now.

This country is fucked. The last thing that needs to happen is for us to be militarily occupied or martial law. I don't see freedom when I look around anymore. I see enslavement in the form of greed (corporate / pharmaceutical / mainstream media propaganda) and narcissism. Gun laws are modified as fuck in this country, but at *least* you can still own one. Speech and being Politically Correct has left us to be *tolerant* aka giving up without a fight or having willpower or simply being beaten to a pulp or silenced via accusations for opening your mouth. Religion is shit on, except if its in the form of the Almighty Government or the Almighty Self.

I don't have a bill of rights, I have a bill of modified rights to be determined for you at whim.

This is just goes to show the absolute perfect collusion between both our political parties behind closed doors. What you see on T.V or media is just an act. It's literally all staged and pre-planned. I mean for Christ sake's every politician reads from a God-damned teleprompter a pre-made speech that they follow to a tee. Trump isn't any different. He's renegade on almost every single one of his campaign promises except for the ones that cause the most public discord and fighting. Where's the term limits for senators and congress men? But at least we got the *token* lobbyist ban, oh wait how well has that worked out? Oh hey let's go back to Afghanistan or how about lets invade North Korea or Iran.

It's all Helegian Dialect in perfect form. I know I get hated on for being a *theorist* at times, but seriously God dang what will it take for people to wake up to all this bullshit that is going on.Trump is just a paid actor, like Obama was following the pre-planned script of the elitist-technocratic-marxist-totalitarians.

I made a thread not all that far back about How American Society is already in a state of orwellianism. Boy was I not wrong at all.

Agreed, but Obama and Clinton were pushing for internet ID numbers in TPP.

One serves telecoms, the other hollywood, but both result in the end of the free internet. Some call this controlled opposition.
Bingo. This is why I'm unaffiliated no fucks given about Dem or Reps. Same beast two names.

Were fucked.

This may have already been posted in this thread, I don't remember where I came across it. Regardless.

Yup, pretty fucked up.
"Consumers can only resist when they have choices. But the FCC itself says that only slightly more than one-third of Americans have access to more than one internet provider offering service that it considers broadband. In rural areas, only 39 percent of people have access to even one broadband provider."

You must be on some heavy drugs. By removing regulation there's no way for anyone to be diligent about anything other than telecoms companies ensuring they maximize their profits. As I just posted, above,

This post is a total waste of time because it has already been established earlier ITT that Obama essentially didn't have any choice about appointing that knob to the commission, but it was totally Trump's choice to make him chairman and push his agenda to eliminate net neutrality. You can't blame this on the Dems. If it weren't for them, there wouldn't have been any regulations to repeal. So, despite your claim you are anti-partisan, your post is basically blaming Obama in the one case where the blame lies solely with Republicans.

A virile, pro-active population is not at the mercy of the markets. They can simply boycott and protest against providers that do not offer them a platform similar to what they have come to expect.

Being seen as a "scammer" that takes advantage of customers due to advantageous legislation, is a killing blow in the era of social media. Most companies go to great lengths in order to avoid this sort of a reputation.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/14/technology/net-neutrality-repeal-vote.html

WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission voted on Thursday to dismantle landmark rules regulating the businesses that connect consumers to the internet, granting broadband companies power to potentially reshape Americans’ online experiences.

The agency scrapped so-called net neutrality regulations that prohibited broadband providers from blocking websites or charging for higher-quality service or certain content. The federal government will also no longer regulate high-speed internet delivery as if it were a utility, like phone services.

The action reversed the agency’s 2015 decision, during the Obama administration, to better protect Americans as they have migrated to the internet for most communications.

Ajit Pai, the chairman of the commission, said the rollback of the rules would eventually help consumers because broadband providers like AT&T and Comcast could offer people a wider variety of service options. Mr. Pai was joined in the 3-to-2 vote by his two fellow Republican commissioners.

“We are helping consumers and promoting competition,” Mr. Pai said before the vote. “Broadband providers will have more incentive to build networks, especially to underserved areas.”

The discarding of net neutrality regulations is the most significant and controversial action by the F.C.C. under Mr. Pai. In his first 11 months as chairman, he has lifted media ownership limits, eased caps on how much broadband providers can charge business customers and cut back on a low-income broadband program that was slated to be expanded to nationwide carriers.

His plan, first outlined early this year, set off a flurry of opposition. Critics of the changes say consumers may have more difficulty finding content online and that start-ups will have to pay to reach consumers. In the last week, there have been hundreds of protests across the country, and many websites have encouraged users to speak up against the repeal. Some groups have said they planned to file a lawsuit challenging the change.

“I dissent, because I am among the millions outraged,” said Mignon Clyburn, one of the two Democratic commissioners who voted against the action. “Outraged, because the F.C.C. pulls its own teeth, abdicating responsibility to protect the nation’s broadband consumers.”

During Mr. Pai’s speech before the vote, security guards entered the meeting room at the F.C.C. and told everyone to evacuate the room. They did not offer details but demanded that attendees leave until the room was cleared. Commissioners were ushered out a separate back door. The hearing restarted a short time later.

Despite all the uproar, it is unclear how much will change for internet users. The rules were essentially a protective measure, largely meant to prevent telecom companies from favoring some sites over others. And major telecom companies have promised consumers that their experiences online would not change.

Some of you may be interested in this more in-depth discussion that references the subject in a practical manner in regards to Youtube...etc. Some of their analogies are on point, and overall, their gloomy vibe about it all is sadly quite justified.

Lol at blaming this on Trump.
FCC can fuck themselves.
Still has to pass congress.

I think the ability to charge what you want for a service you provide is good for business. That's just me, maybe you have a different idea? Lol.
Anti Trust laws anyone? There's a reason for it. Net Neutrality could be seen as a watered down version of it.

I suppose your in favor of monopolies like Google, Microsoft, Oil, amazon? Don't mess with convenience am I right?
