Exposing the Grift: Go Woke Go Broke

If any of you culture war losers have been watching the video game world, Ubisoft has been in a bunch of hot water lately with huge losses and layoffs causing entire divisions (heh) to close down.

By your own definition, you're the biggest culture war loser on here because you're the one who made a thread about this.

This is up there in terms of self-own threads.

I mean I do get why people would be upset. They want to play as a real ninja or samurai as they see them in the movies. The fans have long wanted it set in Japan to live out their ninja fantasy. I also don’t think this is an artistic choice by Ubisoft, but rather a cheap ploy to drum up interest.

But I also don’t see a reason to get all triggered about it. I think that is happening just because some people live for this limp dick race baiting drama. The truth is Assassin Creed games have been kind of shitty for a long time now, and Ghost of Tsushima blows it out of the water. So fuck Assassins Creed anyways, there’s a much better game out there to play. Even if it was a Japanese main character, who really cares? It’s going to feel cheap next to Ghost.

Don’t disagree… and it might be fun

It’s still a mistake by Ubisoft. Why give a reason for fans to not play your game?

There has to be hundreds of historical figures that would have got Asian fans super excited

The game environment is competitive enough

I don't get the drama. Yasuke has been in a lot of Japanese media already. And it ain't like Assassin's Creed ever cared about historical accuracy to begin with. Just wait till the game comes out, see if it's good, then complain

My understanding is that AC games are usually pretty true to the culture of that game, and the upcoming one seems to fly in the face of that precedent by making a black foreigner the protagonist of a game set in Japan. Can you imagine the outcry if AC: Origins had a white protagonist, just some schmuck from England who happened to be visiting Egypt at the time? That would seems pretty culturally inappropriate and tone-deaf, wouldn't it?

Do people really care about this ? Whether it's Tom Cruise or some random black guy playing a Samurai why would anybody actually care lol

I was into the early Assasin's Creed games but haven’t bought a console in like 20 years. Did they ever make a WW2 version?
No. In Unity there is a level where you get transported to Paris 1944 and climb the Eiffel Tower but i think that's it.

This is where it gets weird though. Japanese consumers were probably not going to buy the game anyways. They’re fairly insular and not a lot of western games are able to penetrate their market. So maybe that is kind of a non factor.

I really do think they chose Yasuke to try and set themselves apart from Ghost of Tsushima. They’re already going to be drawing a huge comparison because of the settings and they know their game can’t compete on equal footing. That can’t really be overstated- Ghost was a masterpiece. I think moves like this are more of a desperate play than an attempt to spread a woke agenda.

I don’t personally mind Yasukes inclusion. He is a somewhat popular figure in Japanese culture today already. He’s already been the subject of a shitty Netflix anime though and he’s just not what people wanted for an assassins creed Japan. If this game was some independent game about him I bet people wouldn’t be so outraged. But people have been specifically asking for this game since the series began and Ubisoft chose to weird it up when they finally delivered.

Japanese gamers care. They are legit upset that their culture is being used as a backdrop for sweet baby Inc(rip) bs.

Also:
"I can't empathize with the Japanese people, so I was looking for a non-japanese character. "

- Jonathan Dumont

YouTube has translate function and you can read polite yet angry Japanese gamers.

I mean I guess I can see this point of view. But at the same time I'm also ethnically Asian and it doesn't bother me one bit. I'd probably laugh my ass off if I was playing this game

Honestly if you were doing a purely financial analysis of "fans we could gain in Japan for AC" versus a part of the US, it'd be in favor of the latter. Japan's market is Nintendo than everything else.

The girl is a ninja.
Do you can play 2 characters? I always thought Assassin's Creed should have a game set in Japan. I mean what assassins are more famous than ninjas?
Were there female ninjas though? I always thought female assassins at the time dressed up as geisha.

Kunoichi. Yes, she's a playable character. Which is weird af looking at gameplay/trailers. She's all ninja warrior while running in broad daylight at a street market.

If any of you culture war losers have been watching the video game world, Ubisoft has been in a bunch of hot water lately with huge losses and layoffs causing entire divisions (heh) to close down. A hot point of this has been the 'last woke straw' to break the gamer's back which is casting Yasuke as the 2nd protaganist of AC Shadows. Th3 Birdman is an 'anti-anti-woke' youtuber who is a favourite of @SuperAlly and recently he has been in a racial back and forth spat with @Killer Kadoogan 's favourite Korean-American Twitter personality, Kangmin Lee.

Grab popcorn as the feud gets spicy.

Who is the birdman?

Never heard of him/her/they.
