Going through this thread will likely cause me to go mental, but my two cents are the death of meritocracy as a legitimate thing to aim for even though it will never be perfectly achieved, and as a principle to be guided for -- has been HORRIBLE for the country.

The right will accept any absurdly unqualified person appointed to any senior position by the party. Perhaps even more painfully, they will automatically claim "diverse" people in any positions of authority where there is any sort of error as unqualified DEI hires without doing ANY due diligence into the specifics of the people involved or the nature of the issue.

The left is obsessed with their moronic version of splicing demographics and hitting targets no matter how ridiculous at the grassroots to the point that in effect the ramifications can be being a homosexual earns a promotion over being competent. Their denials that the hacktivists get overzealous and take it way further than they should are annoying as fuck.

This issue has always been a sham to me perpetrated by corporate interests resulting in the rational middle ground having become a barren landscape. Most everyone should be ashamed.

As fatr as cinema does I do think the strangely ironic thing is so many people tied up in "Anti Woke" viewpoints look back to the late 80's and early 90's as some golden age of blockbusters. I would argue that blockbusters back then tended to actually be FAR more "left wing" than we see today. Films like Robocop, Aliens, Terminator 2, Total Recall, Running Man, They Live etc are really full of anti establihsment anti reaganist capitalist viewpoints, even stuff like Predator has dodgy CIA connections and Die Hard has the villians as ruthless greedy criminals obsessed with suits. You had plenty of films with a Cop/Solider hero of course but most of the time it was the "lone good man" dealing with a corrupt system and indeed often the "lone good woman".

My take would be the difference is those films were made by talented directors who had some real political weight to them were as what we see today is often(not always there are still people like George Miller around) made by less talented individuals who don't really have much substance to them. You think JJ Abrams is a hardcore feminist? JJ "have Kirk oogle Carol Marcus in her bra/panties for no good reason" Abrams?

I feel like this feeds though into the way such films present their politics, to me something like Aliens was really out to convince its audience that a mothers love better for the world than soliders machismo and corporate greed, you watch that film and your sposed to come away with a catharsis along those lines. A lot of modern stuff to me though seems like its more playing too a partisan divide, films lacking much real substance which fall back on "I kick ass and I'M A GIRL! howboutthat you sexist pig!", basically films that look to play to one audience but talk down to another audience.

Something like Fury Road for me is a film of real substance though which doesnt do that. indeed I would argue its very plot is based on rejecting simplistic divides like that, Furisoa's character starts off taking the wives to a feminist paradise but we end up seeing it doesnt exist and that someone like Nux is just as much a victim of Immortan Joe, the idea of zero sum ideniodty politics is rejected in favour of taking aim at the real emeries of much of society same as so many of those earlier films.

I feel like its a partisan game that both sides like to engage in though but its really not "progressive left vs conservative right" but rather "centralist liberal vs conservative right", the two groups who actually have real power.

but even this is putting woke in a box that tacks on an essential question: is this product good or bad? this question is ultimately superfluous to whether the content of a product is espousing woke ideologies. you can have two products that are expressing the same exact politics or ideologies, but one is nuanced & the other is hamfisted. how is the latter woke but the former isn’t?

This works both ways.
People do hide behind minority cards to shield themselves against criticism of bad products. They may say 'you hate this because you hate women/gays/blacks/etc' to shield themselves from criticism of a bad product.

It is also true that people like you will criticize a product simply for having the appearance of "pushing an agenda", or because the cast is diverse without actually evaluating the product for what it actually is.
You will focus only on supposed "wokeism" and completely ignore all of the other positive points or problems.


This game cost 100S OF millions of dollars to develop, and it took 10+ years. Constant delays, complete reworks of core features, and then ended up giving players nothing that they wanted. The failure of this game had nothing to do with "woke".
Of course there are going to be layoffs when a game loses this much.



A good breakdown of why Ubisoft actually failed.

*Ubisoft wanting players to play their games through their site instead of Steam meant that they lost out on players that were unwilling to go through that hassle.
*Shitty NFT scam games that no one asked for.
*Half ass made games that released unfinished, and then they later release extra content (for more $) that should have been in the game from the start.
*UbiSoft workers went on strike last year, and there are tons of known issues about work culture and management.
*DefiantX online game shut down last year after it was promised that it wasn't. So if you spent a good chunk of money on that game, you're SOL.

There are so many structural issues with the gaming industry and then Ubisoft as a company and how it runs before we could even begin to talk about whatever political bullshit you weirdos have issue with. This doesn't even address the technical side of these games when it comes to graphics, bugs, loading times, or gameplay.
