News ESPN Raising Price of UFC PPVs and ESPN Plus in 2021

They’re just encouraging more people to stream illegally.

Anyone remember when the UFC’s were $19.99 back in the 90’s?
Did you see the new Anti Piracy Laws regarding streamers that were recently passed ?

I only hope that in addition to this extra money they require, that we get some fucking commercials from the commentators & Bruce Buffer in the middle of the event I paid 3 weeks wages for... & hopefully they do some full on commercials between fights for some bullshit that has nothing to do with this event.

As of Jan. 8, 2021, the price of UFC pay-per-view events on ESPN Plus — the exclusive home of the mixed martial arts fights in the U.S. — will increase by $5 apiece, from $64.99 to $69.99. In addition, the price of an annual ESPN Plus subscription for new subscribers will go up 20%, rising from $49.99 to $59.99 per year. According to ESPN, renewals of annual subscriptions for existing subscribers will remain at $49.99 until at least March 2, 2021.

It’s the second time ESPN Plus has raised the price of UFC PPVs: When the service first launched in April 2018, the UFC PPV events cost $59.99. That went up to $64.99 each at the beginning of 2020

Jacking up the price the same month that Conor fights, which is guranteed to do 1M+ buys regardless of cost.

The UFC is a monopsony

I choose not to stream because UFC events & boxing are my major forms of entertainment so I want to watch them in their best possible quality on my 70" 4K television. I don't want to be bothered with having to track down any unreliable streams that frequently freeze up or buffer in the middle of the fights. So, I subscribe to ESPN +, DAZN, & I buy about three-quarters of the PPVs. I can afford to do it & I enjoy the events most of the time. So, why not. Hell, some of us have to pay for them or there'd be no more fights to watch.

I don't blame those of you who do stream as being a diehard fight fan is an expensive habit to have & if you're on a budget & raising a family, or whatever it's likely a necessity. I get it. Back in the '90s when cable "cheater boxes" were a thing & I was raising three kids & didn't have the assets that I have now, I used one to get about five or six years of PPVs. So, it's all good.

No offense, but if you were old enough to be raising kids in the 90's, surely you don't fight professionally anymore?

Is your profile picture from when you were a professional fighter?

Yes, sir. That pic was taken at the weigh-in for my pro debut back in the '80s. So, yeah, it's definitely not a current photo & yeah, my days in the ring are long over, bro.

That's cool, man, respect. I'm always happy to hear success stories. It's awesome that you got to live your passion and still ended up well enough off later in life to enjoy the things you like.

Oftentimes people have to choose between future security or doing what they love while they're still youthful enough to do it. At least, that's how it feels.

Thanks, man. Much appreciated. Have a great New Year's Day.
