As much as I think the outrage is ridiculous and manufactured, these comparisons are pretty much just as silly. The likeness of his salute was immediately apparent. His intentions are what matter to me, not whether or not what he did looked like the salute, where you can clearly see the similarities. On these examples, that similarity does not exist. Lets just be real here.

The leading detection mechanism in america for antisemitism had no problem with his gesture.

For me, it's just an optics thing. Regardless of intention, he emboldened a group of sapient trash bags. On inauguration day and mlk no less. Even a a troll, that's still just completely not ok. Is Elon a Nazi? I don't know. Wouldn't surprise me but I have no means of definitively proving that one way or another. It doesn't really change the situation tho IMHO.

At the very least, the universal reaction should have been along the lines of "Wow that wasn't ok and he should probably say something to clear this up". The response of many people scrambling to find false equivalencies just makes the situation look worse than it already did.

But hey, that's just me.
