Elizabeth Warren Releases DNA Test Showing "Strong Evidence" of Native American Ancestry

What does the two have to do with each other?

I guess the lying about something for personal gain aspect. I don't think it matters tho. I am not a Trump fan, but his base already sees him for what he is, and they don't care. On the other hand, Warren's base looks at her as someone fighting for social justice, not someone exploiting it. So it might have some negative impact with her base. It is actually kind of weird that she brought it back up by releasing this.

I have to admit tho, that Trump can be funny as hell. He even has Melania smirking here.

I don't think it is about hating being White. Claiming native ancestry confers certain benefits. I have a friend who has distant Native American ancestry, and looks fully North-West European. This friend once lamented on not having enough Native ancestry to be recognized by a tribe because that would make them eligible for Affirmative Action and college financial aid.

That alone wouldn't qualify him for any assistance . . . my parents made next to nothing and my tribal membership didn't help me get anything until after I was married and in my last semester of college.

And part of the reason is also just that it makes a person seem exotic and different. It's cool / edgy to stand out from a crowd and be perceived as unique.

Those are always the fun folks to meet . . . I know a guy who is whiter than white, but has just enough Chickasaw blood to be a member. He has actually taken a job with the tribe and probably done more for their language program than many others. He lives in Oklahoma and recently returned from a duck hunting trip up north. When he got home he proclaimed "Back home in the Chickasaw Nation".

Seemed a bit over the top to me . . .

i find it hilarious that i see all over my facebook feed the liberals celebrating as if Trump was pwnd because Warren is 1/1024th (or whatever tiny fraction) native

He's right about having horrible immigration laws . . . but everyone is to blame for that crap.

I know that . . . I'm an enrolled member . . . I've posted their membership requirements in this thread . . . you can say you're this tribe or that tribe all you want . . . the point was that until you have a proof of a direct descendent on one of the roles you're just talking.
I thought about doing that. We have family on there. I just don’t see the point since I’m like 6%

"So, although no evidence has been found that Warren is part Indian, for years two universities listed her as such. She has identified herself as a minority, as when, signing her name “Elizabeth Warren — Cherokee,” she submitted a crab recipe (Oklahoma crabs?) to a supposedly Indian cookbook. This is a political problem."

This really is one of the worst political moves I can remember ever seeing, from a strategic standpoint. She really just went completely out of her way to shoot herself in the foot here. And it is all downside, zero upside. Almost no one was talking about this old story, it was a footnote. And she comes running out onto the national stage out of nowhere, 'HEY GUYS, REMEMBER THIS THING??' It's borderline insane.

I think it was inept, but if she wants to run for president, and this shows that she does, she has to do something about her woman of color problem. It was only a footnote because Warren herself was out of the spotlight, but the minute the campaign starts the Pocahontas jokes were going to come rolling in. And I don't think it is only an issue of her honesty or dishonesty, it's a problem that the system of encouraging racial diversity, especially in universities, is a scam.

Harvard called Elizabeth Warren their first woman of color law professor. In writing. Think about that. That's never going to play well with anyone who wasn't already a vote for Warren. But if Warren comes out and criticizes Harvard to excuse herself, she's attacking a system near and dear to her particular elite demographic.

So in one sense, I don't blame Warren, but on the other, she's made herself/been made into a symbol for a corrupt and cynical racial spoils system.

A lot of people think this move is a confirmation she is running in 2020. There's little reason to bring it up before midterms other than if she's seeing his as the 2 year til 2020 mark. Usually you start hearing more about candidates planning on running around this time.

She should have just let other people talk about it though, and only brushed it off whenever directly asked about it herself. Her focal point should always be the issues, things like attacking the big banks, that's her strength and the thing that separates her from Trump. That's what would resonate in a positive way with the people she needs to win over. Diving right into the identity politics bullshit, doubling down on this DNA bullshit... not only is she playing his game on his terms, which shows tremendous a strategic weakness and is just a horrible look for someone trying to be a leader, but she's also tapping straight into this 'I'm a Woman, as a Woman, Woman, Woman, and did I mention I'm a Woman, and I'm also a Woman of Color, Kinda Sorta' stuff that no one except a fraction of her base wants to hear. I think most people are sick of identity politics. With the exception of people she already would win with anyway. She needs to be a broken record about issues that matter to people if she wants a chance: Healthcare, fuck the big banks, etc. Those are her only advantages over Trump. Instead, she picked the most ridiculous, irrelevant issue that puts her in a negative light, and shone all of the country's attention on it again. Just a terrible move.

Yeah I have very little doubt that she is probably running. This DNA thing is just a crazy move. It would be like Trump suddenly putting out a commercial saying 'Hey guys, remember that whole grab em by the pussy thing? I just want to reiterate once again, that I didn't mean anything by that. Carry on.'

This seems like it would have been the best way forward. Treat it like Obama treated the birther stuff. This seems like it could be a real tar baby for Warren, and the more she engages it the more it hurts her. I'm waiting to see whether any of this is used against her in the primaries. Friendly fire can be brutal in politics.

You aren't wrong, but the ability to see past your own base and knowing how to reach out to independents and even people who usually vote the other way is a relatively rare political ability. So one question going forward is whether this is merely a rare gaffe by Warren or whether it shows a deeper insensitivity to what matters to voters beyond her own circle.

Well, they're just parroting the propaganda media ran out and stated she was vindicated.
