Eddie Alvarez as champ

He had a lot of heart but was short and a lot of times looked really tense and stiff in striking exchanges. Don’t think he was ever close to elite and wouldn’t rank him in an all time list
Is DP elite or JG? Bc he was the first to finish JG. And gave DP 2 hard ass fights. And was winning both before technicalities changed the course

He's one of the best lws ever. He looked bad in that fight, but styles make fights. A bad fight doesn't invalidate an entire career. Its crazy how much disrespect he gets from casuals on here. He has a very impressive resume, better than most ufc lw champs.
He has the best resume in LW by far.

Never close to elite but has an elite resume :hmm:

I don't agree with that, I think Conor was just a terrible match up for him. Eddie has never had a great chin and while he has okay defense, he can be there to be hit. Conor cracks so hard he can change the complexion of a fight with one shot.

I think it was a mixture of all that.

Well yeah, both of those guys are highly ranked lws with multiple ranked wins.

He had no answers for the speed. He had no answers for the counter. He had no answers at all for Conor. It was like he was an amateur. This is a guy who finished Justin Gaethje. That night was the end of his career.
JG is a very different fighter and a much better match up for him stylistically. Eddie is a "technical brawler" that has decent offensive wrestling, mediocre top control and no sub game to speak of. On paper there isn't much of a path to victory for him against a laser accurate counter striker with power and decent tdd and bjj defense.

People hate Conor so much they have to discredit Eddie too, it's sad.

Alvarez is the guy who finished poirier (nc but whatever) and gaethje after his mcgregor loss..

Champion and jbg prophet everywhere for a long time.. atg lw..

Sherdoggers are very sensitive about conor and will use that as an excuse to shit on alvarez but the truth is he fought 2 eras of ufc champions/contenders and came out on top..

he was really exciting and fun to watch in bellator
solid wrestler and boxer who had a questionable chin -- he always got hurt early -- but GOAT level heart. this guy always came back and managed to win more often than not.

his UFC run was super underwhelming, but he managed to stop RDA who was a beast at the time. i think he relied in his toughness to outlast and finish other guys, but that won't work as you get older and face better competition.

the conor fight is still a mystery to me. i think he could have done much better if he planned to wrestle exclusively, but he's admitted that the importance of the fight and the trash talk got in his head.

he was obviously an awful UFC champ, but plenty of people have lost the title without defending.
he has a super strong resume for his time. he's sort of like the dan henderson or jake shields of 155 -- he's a guy who fought all over the place, beat names you've heard of, lost some fights he shouldn't have lost, but overall very good. and unlike hendo or shields, he did manage to hold the belt and beat one of the best UFC LW champs.

Honestly it does seem like people caught up in Conor hate mad that Eddie couldn't beat him. If they were really knowledgeable about the division, they should have been nervous for Eddie going into that fight like I was. Eddie is hittable, always has been. Never been a gsp style hold them down all round kind of fighter.

I remember being confused at the time that a lot of people had Eddie as a favorite, not understanding what they were basing that on other than wanting someone to beat Conor. RDA would have had a much better chance than Eddie.

he's a beast one of the best lw's ever honestly, I think he might have been in his prime in bellator though. I suspect he used to cheat, but that's only because of his phsyique.

As a resident of Philly I expected Conor to starch Eddie, just from the stylistic favorable matchup. Short chinny technical brawler vs Master Counterstriker who has the size, height, and reach advantage. It didn't stop me from rooting for him but I was not surprised how badly he got beat.

Eddie is a guy who does well against grapplers due to his TDD, but good strikers like Conor beat him more times than not. I also think Nate would beat Eddie in a 5 round fight.

Eddie is a guy who would be a tougher fight for Khabib (Khabib would still win with similar or less effort than the Dustin/Justin fights) then for Conor.

The clips of him being demolished by Conor for the Lightweight Title at MSG are doing the rounds today as it’s the five year anniversary.

I never really followed Eddie’s career that closely in or out of the UFC. My only real memory of him is that night against Conor where he fought like he’d just been pulled out of the crowd selling popcorn.

When you think of Alvarez how do you rate him? Especially as champ? Was he as bad as that fight made him look? I actually thought that title loss was more embarrassing than Aldo’s loss?
Conor was just a terrible matchup for him, but his fights against Poirier, Chandler, and Gaethje are a more accurate measurement of his talent.

He was never going to be a long reigning champ due to limited takedown ability and how often he gets hit, but he was tough as nails, had great boxing in the pocket, and was very well rounded.

All around great fighter.

Edward destroyed a prime RDA and Gaethje, and McGregor made him look like a Bellator Facebook Prelim fighter.

I rate Alvarez in the top 4 LWs of all time, the only LW that has more top 10 ranked win than him is Gomi.

kinda just right place at the right time. he beat chandler in bellator and came to the ufc

lost to cerrone
split dec over giblert
split dec over pettis
then demolished RDA in the title fight.

since then has looked pretty terrible. in his prime he was arguably on the best LWs of his era.

I remember when he came to the UFC and it was shocking how he had to adapt his game to the new generation of bigger/better strikers.

He won the fights against Gilbert and Pettis by doing tons of clinching and top-control from guard off of takedowns; he arguably didn't out-strike any of his first 3 UFC opponents and then managed to catch RDA with a perfect shot and just go nuts on him to get the finish.

Great fighter of his era, but seems like a perfect storm had to happen for him to become champion - how many guy get title fights off a 2-1 record with the 2 wins being split decisions that they win by clinching/top control with almost limited GnP + no submission threats ?

At least he got that Red Panty night payday; UFC sent the title fight contract to Khabib (whom signed) to leverage Alvarez into fighting McG at a date/place of their choosing.

A tough as they come fighter in his time and a threat to anyone, except Mcgregor apparently lol
Lets not forget how terrified he was of Dustin. Did an illegal shot in a fight he was getting roughed up in. Dustin said he'd run it back and Eddie acted like he didn't deserve to fight him again. Then finally got booked and fought scared (again threw illegal shots) then got finished.

Agreed. Conor fans who shit on Eddie and Aldo make no sense, because it's those fights that show how good prime Conor was in the first place.
