Eddie Alvarez as champ

he won a tough man contest against justin and hes still managed to grab titles and win big fights even well past his prime. he is true grit.

Eddie is a top 10 LW all time. The strength of his resume is longevity. The best version of Eddie was very good (maybe not great), but he maintained it for a full decade. He tends to get overlooked because prime Eddie would likely lose to a number of other LWs in their primes (e.g., Khabib, BJ, Gomi, Frankie, Benson, Tony, Conor), but his longevity and consistency shouldn't be ignored.

He has the same amount of LW defences as Conor and was absolutely destroyed by Conor as well. So, according to Sherdog, he must be the worst LW ever to have competed in the UFC.

He's one of the best lws ever. He looked bad in that fight, but styles make fights. A bad fight doesn't invalidate an entire career. Its crazy how much disrespect he gets from casuals on here. He has a very impressive resume, better than most ufc lw champs.

Agreed.

The disrespect (as is the case for many other fighters) is unfounded. He has wins over both parties in last weaks slug fest (Gaethje by KO). Above all, he's always entertaining, which is why we watch.

I didn't watch much of Eddie's fight until recently. This guy brings the violence for sure.

Sure, so BJ Penn, Gomi, and Aoki don't have great resumes because they fought well past their primes right? So stupid. Might as well just play it safe and retire early.
Alvarez lost a bunch in his prime …He has a great resume , but you overrate it

As much as the HL reels show Eddie getting straight dismantled by Conor, he did find success early with the leg kicks and other things before Conor really got going.

That fight ruined his career. He was badass prior to signing to the UFC. He scraped some rough decisions to get the TS but he handled and caught a prime RDA on a bad night but it was a helluva win.

The clips of him being demolished by Conor for the Lightweight Title at MSG are doing the rounds today as it’s the five year anniversary.

I never really followed Eddie’s career that closely in or out of the UFC. My only real memory of him is that night against Conor where he fought like he’d just been pulled out of the crowd selling popcorn.

When you think of Alvarez how do you rate him? Especially as champ? Was he as bad as that fight made him look? I actually thought that title loss was more embarrassing than Aldo’s loss?
Watch eddie vs michael chandler 1

Amen.

Guy who is both Bellator and UFC champ cannot he a “ bum .” He’s one of the GOAT despite what Conor did to him.

He had alot of heart, but nothing can convince me the reason he became champion becasue RDA had a rough weight cut and looked like shit even rehydrated

How can beating every top LW in the world except BJ Penn at the time be overrated? LOL You're an idiot if anything.

He "lost a bunch" to the #1 LW in Aoki (avenged), and top 10 fighter Michael Chandler (avenged). His only blemish is the Cerrone fight where he blew his wad trying to kill him in the first.

Imagine being on sherdog since 2008 and posting like you've been around since 2021.

@Chael_Sonnen is fairly educated on Alvarez' career, afaik.
Him vs Gaethje was my favourite 3 rounder, maybe Chandler vs Gaethje surpassed that but IDK. Eddie's body work was just beautiful, Eddie really showed the blueprint on how to beat him. Did a much better job than Poirer did imo, took far less damage and was more dominant.

I think both Dustin fights were winnable with a bit more luck/better fight IQ/better gameplane etc. If he hadn't of thrown that stupid fucking 12/6 elbow in the second fight.

I personally have Alvarez as the second best all time LW behind Khabib, but if he manages to somehow get the ONE belt then I put him ahead of Khabib. I don't think he will but you never know. I do hope he retires soon, he is taking so much damage against the much better strikers in ONEFC. It's actually very interesting, obviously the level of grappling is much lower, but Eddie is proving that the level of striking is arguably higher in the ONE LW div than it is in the UFC LW div.

Based on his UFC record, he is probably the weakest LW champ ever. Lost to Cowboy, then two split decisions over Gibliert and Pettis, then the ko over RDA.

He is a great reason you should not judge a fighter purely on their w/l record.

He was obviously tough as nails, thats one thing you cant take away from him.

But he never connected with me in any special way. He was in fun fights with guys I liked better than him. Thats just the way it is.

I felt bad for him in the Conor fight. He really seemed to play right into Conor's hands with whatever he was doin.

He's underrated for sure, though i am not that knowledgeable on him (i know you are, though!).

So thanks for the info - he's got really nice boxing, certainly when it comes to hooks.
I like body work, it is still underused, in theory, going to the body should make you very prone to getting knocked super hard in the head, but just like jumping knees allegedly being the bane of wrestlers: when does it ever happen, as opposed to body work/takedowns being super effective and without major drawbacks, you know?

Eddie had some great fights for many years prior to the UFC. Obviously he was still pretty good when he got there too. He was always a tough kill or be killed type of fighter. Conor was clearly the better fighter when they met. He was skilled, but his approach to fights was from a previous era in MMA. Still a lot of fun to watch and entertained fans for many years.
